1850hl

#1 Post by Will » Mon May 22, 2006 1:27 pm

Hi, ive posted on here before and you guys were all really helpful so i wondered if you could help once more.

Im still thinking of buying a dolomite and whilst id ideally like a sprint ive realised that tho i can insure it i probably cant afford to buy one, at least not a decent ish one with mot.

Therefore i think the 1850 would be the next best thing, I wondered what sort of power you would be getting out of it and what are the top speed and acceleration like. Im currently driving an 1800 marina which manages a respectable is 95 mph or so.

Also i assume upgrade parts such as polybushing are common to most of the range and so are available for the 1850?

What sort of price do decent ones go for, i nearly bid on the yellow one on ebay but realised it was an auto, looked like a good car for £350.

Thanks for any help , Will

No contest...

#2 Post by Jon Tilson » Mon May 22, 2006 2:28 pm

A dolomite will out drag a Marina 1800 and out run it too.
Unlike the Marina it will go round corners and be comfortable in the process.

You can get a decent 1850 for 500 quid and up. Even the best ones will be sub 1500. I have a lovely white one that was listed but I puilled it due to needing a bit more for MoT and not being able to quite finish it in time. Serves me right for going for the free listing.

I have a russet Sprint that's nearly finished too and that will be around 1500...if you can live with the brown colour.
I got my self an 1850 when I wanted a Sprint for the exact same reasons your considering one. Maybe I got a bad one but its never been fast. When I first got it I raced my mate in his 1.2 5 door 02 reg Fiesta. We both joined a dual carriage at the same time and I only just over took him at about 80mph. And a similar thing happend when my mate in his 1.1 206 'raced' me. I could barely beat a 1.1 5 door crap shopping car, Argghhhhhh!

I wish I'd got a Sprint first off. Think about embarising VTR's! I'd be lucky to show up anything over 1 litre!

Get a Sprint if you want to kick ass!

Long as your 1850's got a good lump, well set up and in fine health it's good for a fair turn of speed

Just don't expect to go around corners or stop as well as everyone else as standard

cheers guys,

Thanks for the offer jon but 1500 is more than i can afford bein a poor uni student. Yeah embarrasing a few fools in their chavaliers would be quite nice but oh well... Dont worry Lewis im plenty used to not goin round corners too well or stopping either - if you've ever driven a marina the understeer is god awful, i imagine it makes a dolly feel like a porsche in comparison

So long as the 1850 is comparable to my marina im not too fussed, as much as i like my marina theres just something about the look of the dolly which has always appealed - gotta be the front end and the lights looks mean
The OHC dollies do have understeer initially, due to the engine being quite far forwards in the car. Once you get the car swung into the bend it isn't too bad at all. And of course you can always sort it out with your right foot.

Expectations....

#8 Post by Jon Tilson » Mon May 22, 2006 7:19 pm

The 1850 dolly in good tune will do 60 in about 11 secs and top out at around the ton.
Its got about 90-95 bhp on tap...so very similar to an 1800 Morona on bhp per ton terms but IIRC better set up gearing wise as no-one would punish a Marina and make it go over 90 surely. The din is unbearable. I dont know why they geared Marinas so short...maybe I had a duff one (S reg brooklands) for a while back in my shady student car dealing days and the dolomite was sooo much nicer...no noiser at 90 that the marina at 70.

I regularly drive MGB GT's too with the 1.8 B series lump...they go ok but the Dolly is much more refined and there is little to choose between them on outright go.

Dont expect to beat cavaliers either...unless its the old rwd 1600 of which there are of course none left. Any fwd one is a bit quicker than a dolly sadly, as is a sierra.

Also had a T reg Lancia Beta that would blow all of them away but I dont talk about that here cos it upsets too many people.
Thats a nice looking car you've got there lewis - ive seen the pics of it on the retro rides forum Yeah the marina isnt too happy over 90, the fact that the door and window sills are perished doesnt help matters either!

sorry i didnt mean i woudl expect to beat cavaliers in a dolly jsut that it would be a nice thought to see some peoples faces as you smoked them off the lights in a dolly

Beating people at the lights.....

#10 Post by dollybird72 » Tue May 23, 2006 4:23 pm

Hi Will - I know what you mean!

I'm driving a 1500HL at the moment (I have an 1850HL that is having some work done to it but soon I will be Sprint powered!) and I love it when I'm at the traffic lights and in the lane next to me you have these souped up cars with all the skirts and kit on them..............................being left behind with their occupants as the lights turn green.

Good luck with your search for an 1850 - they are nice cars.
No Adam, they are going the same way, its just that they sit there for a while with mouths agape to see a pretty 5'3" woman driving a car older than them with a certain...aggression?

I think I'll let her get used to the Sprint before I have a cabby in it!

Or it could be the power to weight ratio being improved by her less than 8 stone frame...

Yer cheeky young whipper-snapper Adam! My aunt didn't affectionately don me the name 'Susie (Sterling) Moss' for nothing you know! Mind you, Alun did tell me that old Sterling had a few nasty bangs.

Driving a 1500 and speeding away at the lights is a bit like riding a horse uphill; you have to lean forward to transfer the weight from the back and give the car a helping hand.

Me thinks that once Mr N has a few pints inside him he will get in the Sprint with me. When he does, I'll show him what the grab handles were made for!

So when is your car going to be ready Adam?
