Kwik fit don't do MOT's (Which is just as well). They would fail every car on tyres exhausts and brake system!

I don't know Leicester but if there are any garages that sell older cars, just ask them where they get their cars done.
A friend of mine used to be the manager (They call them 'Partners') at the one in Hendon and that was the largest in the SE. It was a few years ago though. Just never seen one myself that does them. Wouldn't trust them to do it fairly as I say.
No - it wasn't a Kwik fit. I'm takin her to Dave's Auto Services The man on the phone sounded nice enough - I asked him if they did repairs in case she needed any and he just said well we'll just wait and see about the MOT first - she might be fine. If she does end up needin a lot of repairs then I'll shop around I think.

Best thing to say is "My boyfriend will be doing any repairs; he's a mechanic" (even if he isn't) as that relieves the vested interest in them failing it for something that doesn't actually need doing. If they still fail it then is the time to ask about them doing the work...
She failed. . .

#69 Post by kirstycat20 » Thu May 25, 2006 2:25 pm

She failed on the following:
- Steering system excessively tight.
-Nearside track rod end ball joint has excessive play
- Centre exhaust system mounting does not fully support the exhaust sysytem.
- Offside rear brake pipe inadequately supported.

Apparently the last 2 things are easy to fix.
The track rod end ball joint tho - will that need replacing with a triumph specific part? are they easy/expensive to get hold of??
They're not quite sure wots up with the steering - need to do a more thorough check.
Theres also an oil leak from the auto gearbox system, which Ive been told could be nothing big or more sinister. . .

Any comments on any of the above would be much appreciated!!!
Thanks!

- Steering system excessively tight.
Grease the rack and see if it frees up, worst case - new rack - £70 plus fitting plus tracking (£35 ish)
- Nearside track rod end ball joint has excessive play
8 quid ish plus half an hour to fit. If they take care you won't need the tracking done.
- Centre exhaust system mounting does not fully support the exhaust sysytem.
Dunno offhand.
- Offside rear brake pipe inadequately supported.
Probably a bracket missing, probably a couple of quid from wins or less from someone here. Fitting could get expensive as brake lines tend to resist coming apart. If you are lucky and they are patient & skilled should be under an hour.

Shouldn't be too bad.
Not too bad...

Tight steering can be caused by partially seized universal joints on the steering column intermediate shaft. 1500's are prone to this because of the proximity to the exhaust., but sometimes 1850's can get this fault if left standing.

Try greasing the rack first. If no joy Im sure one of us will have a spare shaft.
