Free Racing Seminar!!!
As mentioned earlier, I was speaking with Mark today at Jigsaw about the feedback so far from the TDC Forum. He is very encouraged by what he has heard

He said that he would be more than happy to invite us to his workshops on a Saturday. He will lay on Tea/Coffee and a couple of buscuits for any takers. He wants to show us some of the work currently being performed on my car and other vehicles that he is preparing. The point is that if you are thinking of modifying your own car, then you can bear in mind some things that are needed to pass scrutineering and things to avoid.

We can also have a good look around the SPA Sprint that he has which really is worth a good inspection.

We can fire any questions or concerns at him that we have about the racing side of things and I'm sure he will supply some honest answers. I mentioned to him one of Graemes concerns (and one of mine) that some people in the series will be so competitive on the track and have a budget that could make contact a realistic possibility or occurance. I dont want to be spending £500 every few meetings on panel repairs and paint. He told me that this kind of behaviour does not go on anymore. anybody displaying so much aggression and lack of control that they end up stacking it into someone else would just get banned. There are infrequently 'racing incidents' but these are on the whole very minor.

Put it this way, if anybody looks remotely like they are going to come within banging distance of me, they can have the corner. I want to have some fun not get my car towed off the track with an expensive repair bill. As with most things, you should be able to sus those in your series who are more likely to take the risk and just give them that bit extra room.

My point is, if you are being held back by the thought that your pride and joy is going to get knocked about and ruined, don't be. You can have a nice gentlemanly race with me at the back somewhere!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

So, does anyone want to take Mark up on his offer? Saturday the 4th October would make sense. Below is a link (if it has worked) of where his workshops are located.

Post a reply if you are up for it.
Re: Near Rockingham
Excellent. That's one taker (as well as me). Another one and we might have to stretch to a whole packet of buscuits!

I know they run a modified class up to 3 litres and one over 3 litres. I don't have the regs so I don't remember if this refers to modified engines that the car was factory fitted with or not. I don't know is the real answer so I would have to find out. You run a stag engine don't you?

Triumph engine, Triumph body. No rules broken by my book!

Should be a couple of hours well spent. Where would you be travelling from and would a 10:30 start time suit?
Triumph Engine Triumph Body ?
Yes Triumph Stag engine in the Sprint,
Standard 3lt engine apart from the 4 Barrel Holley,
Be coming from Carshalton Surrey,
That's about 15 Minutes from the M25j8.

At least it's not a 7am Start as at Rockingham.

OK
As you say Mart, it is a bit of a jaunt from Weston S-M and from previous posts I know that you are interested.

It might be an idea for you to put down what mods you have done so far or intend to do to your Sprint. I can then let Mark look at it and give his thoughts on whether it would get past the regs etc.

He is also going to be producing a price for the work he is doing for me on such things as full roll cage, plumbed in fire extinguisher stuff etc. That way people should have an idea of the costs related to things that don't make your car go faster but you will need. Incidentally, you don't need a full roll cage but it is advisable.

SprintV8. That's a fair old trek from where you are. Maybe after we've been to Jigsaw we can talk things through over a pint or soft drink before you have to make the trip back. I'll get back to you on the stag engine situation just as soon as I've spoken to Mark.
Re: OK
Sounds good.

I'd be well up for a trip on the 4th if he can make it late am/early pm.

And a shandy afterwards will be mandatory of course.

Mart - it isnt that far - just a couple of hours up the M5<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> I don't mind being the south west transport link - but it'll have to be GTi-6 power as cruising in the Sprint on motorway trips can be a painful experience (plus i need to keep the miles down).

Scott - do you know what regs are used as the basis? I have to comply with MSA regs which is fairly flexible and scrutineering can be quite low key.
Regs and stuff.
Well that's 4 of us so far which is a great start.

I can get the time knocked back to 12 noon if that suits everyone.

With regard to regs, I am crossing my fingers and hoping that we get welcomed into the TR/TSSC fold and to that end I have borrowed Marks 2002 TR Register/TSSC championship regs. They read a little like stereo instructions in some places so please bear with me.

1.(1) Title and Jurisdiction

The Cambridge Motorsport TR Register/TSSC Race Championship is organised and administered by the TR Register, in accordance with the General Championship Prescriptions of the MSA and these Championship Regulations.

MSA Championship Permit No. CH02133, Race Status: National B, MSA Champinship Grade C

One of the other regulations states:

5.(4) General Technical Requirements and Exceptions:

Cars must comply with MSA general and Technical and Safety regulations as appropriate. Cars must comply with originality on major components of the engine type, gearbox casing and axle/differential casing. Class A Cars must have a current MOT certificate.

Don't know how to interprete that SprintV8. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">
If Spitfires with 2.5's stuffed in them raced in the series then you would probably be alright but I don't think they are. Hope that doesn't curb your enthusiasm. Don't take my word for it though until I've spoken to Mark or unless someone else with knowledge can post an answer.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">
Re: Regs and stuff.
Sounds very similar to MSA regs for Sprints and Hillclimbs.

Each class is split into sub groups of similar engine size.

Class A - road production saloons and sports cars
Class B - Kit cars and replica cars
Class C - modified production saloons and sports cars
Class D - Sports Libre and Hillclimb supersports cars
Class E - racing cars

I compete in Class A3 (1800cc - 2600cc) where the car must be road legal with original seating and bodywork, engine and transmission must be as original design but engine/transmission internals and fuel systems are free to be messed with.

I'm possibly going to go over to Class C so i can run slick tyres, remove the interior fully and just modify the car a bit further and not have to bother with road tax.

If you have a totally different engine you'd get put into Class D where you'd be up against cars with spaceframe chassis and lairy turbos. I dont think a V8 sprint would fit in anywhere else as that engine was never fitted in that body. However if you turned up in a 1500HL with Sprint running gear you'd be OK for classes A and C.

I've no doubt some of the TR/TSSC race regs differ - I'll bring my MSA rulebook with me on Sunday so anyone is free to study it.

The other issue is qualification to get an MSA National B race licence. For classes A to C in Sprinting a Non race licence is all thats required which is just a matter of form filling. I think a race licence requirements are a bit more onerous. I'll find out.
Re: Regs and stuff.
Yes the race licence needs a full medical which you have to pay for (About £100) and a day being taught and tested on track craft/rules, flags etc.

Below is an extract from the MSA website http://www.msauk.org which has all the info.

The Novice Car Race Drivers Scheme

Novice racing drivers will be obliged to undergo a half days training at one of the Association of Racing Drivers’ Schools (ARDS), before they can obtain a National B Licence.

Any one who does not possess a Race Licence (apart from certain exceptions, see below) must first apply to the MSA for a “Go Racing” Pack. The pack contains – among other information – a “Competitors Yearbook”, a VHS video and a novice application form.
