Re: Oh and of course...
Austin 1100/1330's nice cars but RUST - eeek.

Capri - good cars but watch out for body condition. Also going up,up,up in value. Avoid the 1300 though - big pile of poo.

Viva - like em. Nice tight gear lever action.

Datsuns - nice easy cars to drive and usually good mechanicals but the dreaded rust moth bites very hard indeed.
Watch ebay as they are coming up for sale more often.

Just have a look at ebay for whatever grabs your eye and discuss further here.

Good luck.
All the dogs and ragged ones will be part of the great scrappy in the sky or wrapped round a tree by now. Good spares availability, good owners club and small enough to park easily, nippy round town.
If you find one for less than £1500, let me in on the secret!!

Manta A's are a good choice, or even a Manta B, the hatchbacks are extremely practical and cheaper because everyone wants the coupe.

I wouldnt go near a Maxi because they remind me of a slightly pervy relative who had one.

And the Princess is a complete dog, they look OK but understeer appalingly and aquaplane in the wet. They are front wheel drive and have more in common with a Maxi than a Dolomite.

An Acclaim is not a bad car, but it has no credibility as a Classic - its just another Honda.

What about an old school SAAB 99 before GM wrecked the brand.

Or an 80's Audi Coupe like this bad boy versprung durch teknik

<a href="http://www.smifter1971.pwp.blueyonder.c ... >Smifter's Dolomite Sprint Website

Scary XE powered 1974 Dolomite Sprint Trackday Experiment. Maybe someday soon

2002 Octavia VRS - 20 valves, leather, a turbo and 146mph - Czech it out!!

its the wife here!
I am the wife of Chris! blinking husbands!
seen the replys and I am quite encouraged. Still not convinced entirely about trading the old golf in but keep on with the suggestions!
the Austin Maxi..What is that?! I can't drive that. it looks crazy! like a strech mini.
Lovin' the Manta, but only if the old man buys me a leopard.
Not too keen on the vauxhall chevette, only looks good from the headlights
Now the Austin1300...is there a reason basil Fawlty beat it with a branch? i need to know!

and the Wolsley hornet is just a mini with a boot...looks ok but a bit too much like i'd have to invest a lot of love
I am very much liking the idea of the ford fiesta XR2 MK1..looks a boy racer gone mad due to too much indulgence in 80s pop!
And Jonners, i like the cut of your jib, i will trade the old man for a decent head gasket for the dolomite!

love wifey

Re: hmmmm
A late 1500HL auto fits thst bill too perfectly to ignore. Absolutely cracking cars. £500 will buy a minter with MOT, another £500 shoule see it debugged. You're talking city driving, nothing outside of a london taxi cab or suggestion 2 has the turning circle of a Triumph.

If you really don't want a 2nd dolly then a mini. Old autos are rare but unpopular so £1000 should get you a very decent one. Spend the rest on a pair of late doors and debugging. Great fun to drive, specialists are everywhere and parts availability is good.

Both are similarly light to drive, simple to fix, cheap to insure and tax. Parts availability is excellent for both but the web based retailers for mini aren't up to the standard of rimmers or canleys. Parts costs are similar. The dolly wins on simplicity of most jobs and also on simplicity of fixing worst case breakages (engine for £50? no problem). Mini wins on ease of bodywork fixes, every panel is available. Both can have a full service for £45 quid from Halfords.

The support network for minis isn't as good as here and the dolly wins hands down on comfort, space and practicality. The mini is the definitive city car but the dolly comes mighty close and a hell of a lot closer than any other 4 door on the road.

Oh and Mk 1 festers are utter, utter, utter, utter junk.
Are Porsche 911s reliable?
Re: hmmmm
Word of advice of porches. Cost up tyres. Ask the price of a service. Exhaust system sir? Certainly sir. Does sir prefer it with or without veseline? Ask how much for a cambelt job or a water pump? I could have afforded a very tidy volksporker a while back and looked at a number. I even found a very nice red, well looked after and affordable example but found that a waterpump job would cost more than the car, almost as much in fact as the GT6 I bought instead cost. And thats from a specialist not a dealership. You do not work on a porker engine without the correct special service tools unless your name is george. Real porkers (911 and up) cost a lot more to live with than the 924/944/928 volkswagen parts bin series.

The only one I regret not buying was the first one I looked at that was rough but servicable and cheap enough to be disposable if something expensive broke. (just about anything then)

If you can stick a 1 on the front of your budget I can put you in touch with a very nice 911 ragtop. Pretty elderly but lived indoors a lot of it's life.
Couldnt understand why a really clean E30 318 touring in silver wasnt snapped up at 950....

Also a nice TR6 admittedly in Topaz orange and no overdrive but at 5650 with new hood and all new suspension and still no takers. Madness.
Meanwhile a nut and bolt F reg mini woody traveller makes 12 grand. Bonkers
