im mental, i am...

#1 Post by dollyboy » Tue Sep 19, 2006 9:46 pm

driving up the M1 tonight on autopilot, like ya do, brain sort of going off on weird tangents that even baffle me sometimes, it occured to me that the car stereo sounds better in the dark

has anyone else noticed this bizarre phenomenon?

so me being me, i questioned it to myself, how is it possible that a car stereo could sound better in the dark? air colder, therefore more dense, therefore transmitting sound more effectively? dont think so, stereo should be pretty constant in fairly well sealed climate controlled environment like my mile munching lugooona.

couldnt think of a logical explanation so changed the question to 'why would I perceive that the stereo sounds better in the dark?'

drugs? nope.

only possible conclusion i came to is that in the dark with less to see, other senses sharpen up, so your brain puts more emphasis on the info it gains from places other than your eyes... this led me on to thinking why nightclubs/pubs/concerts etc are always dark, and it all sort of made sense.

that kept my mind occupied between junction 22 and 23 anyway.

does anyone else think about weird sh1t like this or is it just me?

You do hear more clearly when you concentrate on sound. When we mixed our CD, we did use to sit in the room and listen with our eyes closed, concentrating on the sound to make sure we heard everything.

On the motorway, I think driving becomes pretty much completely sub-concious, as all you need to do is keep your right foot and hands in the same place. It gives you space to concentrate on other stuff.

In the car is one of the few places I get space to think, kind of like the bath but much faster.

When I get in my bath I generally get out cleaner. I cannot say the same with my cars, quite the opposite actually!

i like your way of thinking kev, but the reason way night clubs are kept dark is to give the less well blessed looking folk more of a chance (incase the fizzy pop doesn't do its job).
