Re: Why not?
I started off while a student with A30, A40 and Ford 100E, each ending up in the scrapyard as it fell apart. After Uni I got a brand new Escort 1300 Mk2 as a company car- that went everywhere flat out and the engine expired after 50000 miles. As a punishment I was given a Marina to drive - oh what an awful car. Then a new T reg Dolomite 1500HL - I thought I had really arrived - what a beautiful car in pageant blue - style, class, charisma! At that stage I could only dream of a Sprint but vowed I would get one someday. Years followed of Cortinas and endless functional Jap boxes, eventually getting my first Sprint, followed soon by a second. Maybe not as reliable as the Nissan I use for work but one hell of a lot more fun, makes me want to drive for the sake of driving, nothing to do with getting from A to B. Turns a lot of heads too these days. One day I'll sell the Nissan, but never the Sprint.
Its been said before......
........there is only one thing with which to replace a Sprint!

why a dolly?
I have to agree. I could have had a nice.......Corsa?

Instead I have a very cool sounding, retro looking 1850 with an amazing interior that i can just roll around in, as opposed to some mass-produced box.

It's fun! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Only Dolly.....?
My mum got a '77 dolly 1300 reg FZN478 in '86.I thought it was pretty cool........until, while out looking for a new fuel sender we came across a white dolly that a guy had sitting at his house. It had a vinyl roof and the best alloys I'd ever seen...the seed was sewn.
The 1300 was replaced with 1l metro which I started driving (legally) but hankered after another dolly.
I came across a '79 1500hl (JZY471)in a breakers, gave him £50 and towed it home. The body was rotten beyond my abilities, so I then got a '81 1500 (SZY859) and made it into a hl.I drove it for a couple of years but always wanted a sprint (v rare in Ireland). In 1993 I eventually found a '76 Sprint (1177NI) paid £800 (a lot when you're 19) and ran it until it broke me. Still have Szy and the sprint in the garage, but I'm currently driving an almost modern diesel. I'm hoping to replace this with the 1500 for everyday use by early next year with the sprint being recommisioned shortly after!!!!
Can't wait!!!
1978
Went to an open eveing at the Local BL/JRT dealer. From the Marinas, Allegros, Mini's, Rovers there was one car that stood out from the crowd, a Dolly Sprint. Since I was wearing shorts and was on my pushbike, Salesman wouldn't let me have a drive, so I waited till I was 17 and bought my first. Have had about 7 in total, not yet developed the full symptoms like our Alun, but getting there. Modern Motor, great, but lacks a certain something, character, Sprints have it by the bucket load and that Engine is an engineering masterpiece despite its (I think undeserved) reputation. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Re: 1978
I like the wolf in sheeps clothing approach, used to have a cavalier 1.6L with a 130 engine in it. Then I had a 306 GTi 6 (looks like the HDI). Then I had a baby, bought a house, missus gave up work so I had to run 2 cars on one budget and after a year of crappy carness decided to add a sprint to my collection. The lowered ride height and sports exhaust hint at something more powerful than meets the eye, but not enough to put off the odd unsuspecting SRi or XR3i. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Dolly Revisited....
I started when my dad gave me a 1500TC when I was as Uni in 1988 aged 18. Spent many a weekend putting bits that has fallen off back on and adding things like extra spots, air horns, dash from a scrap sprint etc. The whole car was written off twice! Had a rear wheel come off once coming down a hill in Sheffield.

Always wanted a Sprint but cost always prevented it. Then 15 years and a family later a casual conversation with my brother pointed me towards a Minosa Sprint from a friend. Next thing I know it's sitting on the drive and now the fun begins.

I know people say you shouldn't buy the first one you look at but I couldn't stop myself. And there are definately times when I wonder what I've got myself into but then I start it up, drive away and smile <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
Better than a old Sprint
thread was only this year!!! And the end result was a restored Sprint...

In the ASDA carpark, the local Polo, Nova, Punto posers all envy my burbly exhaust (no, honest, the back box has not blown... it's just straight through...) and the fact that they can't match the variety of my Inca'ish Yellow panels and bullet mirror...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Those PC Boys are a Poet, and probably don't Noet
The PC boys have given us the answer to 'why a Sprint'....The Sprint may have had reliabilty problems (only for those who didn't know what they had got) but when it was on song it had the grace, power and balance to embarrass most contemporary sports cars.

Refering to their 'yoof' test track days thay go on to say, As an apprentice we had a test track where we tried to set the fastest times in any cars the garage had for sale. A Sprint won hands down and that left a lasting impression on me.....

? is, which one of us has the car 'with the nads thrashed off it? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> '
