Resto Show

#16 Post by mem sec » Tue Mar 16, 2004 1:33 pm

Andy
Been reading through this quickly, the speedo cable won't fit never mind be long enough. O/D cables fix into the 'box in a different manner, can't quite remember how but I positive they do.
Just a reminder to everyone that the clocks go forward on Sunday - we'll lose an hours sleep <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":"> !
I'll be contacting all volunteers to arrange getting your show passes to you and confirm arrangements.
By the way,can anyone recommend a van hire company in the Birmingham area?
Engine Swap

#19 Post by Carl » Mon Mar 22, 2004 8:47 pm

Andy,
the speedo cable connection to the gearbox requires one of those right-angle gear drives. They usually go for about £20 in good nick. One of the Spitfire specialists may be able to help with this.
I'm at a wedding the night before so I'll be along to the show later on (once the fog clears !). I may have one of these angle drives spare. Let me know if you need it. All the best

I'm still struggling with this gearbox; it certainly doesn't have an angle drive so if you do have one I'd be very grateful...
I also need a speedo cable, exhaust bracket and that rectangular plate which fits under the rubber block.Oh and while the engine is out I might as well fit an new clutch as well!
See you on Sunday <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
So we are just doing the engine then, unless we can find a replacement box

Club Stand

#23 Post by Carl » Sun Mar 28, 2004 9:11 pm

Well done to (in no particular order) Andy, Bruce, Bruce's mate, Phil, Ian, and Malc, for putting together such a great stand (hope I haven't forgotten anybody). I'm sure Andys' car will run much better on 'Peckam Spring' !!!

The car runs great, just a little pinking to sort out.I took her for a spin last night,no problems other than the fact that the choke cable seems to have jammed completely.I'll have a look at this tonight,it probably just needs some adjustment.
Just seen the photos from the show, looked very good. Sorry I wasn't able to make it as I was 30,000 feet over the Atlantic at the time!

I've found out what the problem with the choke was; the spring which operates the lever on the jet is broken. When you pull the choke out,the actual choke lever on the carb isn't moving, hence why the car was reluctant to start on Sunday.
I'll strip the old carb down tonight and see if the spring on that one will fit.
Just as well Malc - cos it all went pear shaped last night <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o"> ....
It all began on Wednesday; I managed to fix the choke mechanism using the spring/linkage from another carb.Sorted - or so I thought.
Anyway,Thursday night I toddled off to drop off club display equipment.First thing I realised was that the choke needed some adjustment,it was staying on after I'd pushed the button in.Stopped on the A38 to see what I could do with it.Answer was not a lot seeing as I'd not got a screwdriver on me.Drove off only to discover that the exhaust had dropped off <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> .No big deal, the rear hanger had bounced off it's mounting.Popped it back on,set off again.
The return journey went better (for a while),I'd managed to adjust the choke cable, though I think the mixture needs tweaking a bit.Anyway, thundering down the M6 I noticed the ignition warning light come on and the temp gauge taking a dive to the right.Fantastic.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">
Pulled up on the hard shoulder, bonnet up - fanbelt had come off.Water gushing out of the expansion bottle.A quick inspection revealed that the belt was still in one piece, though a couple of chunks were missing.Amazingly,I managed to get it back onto the car and even more amazingly, the car started.Took a few seconds for the ign warning light to go out,but I was on my way again.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Little Belter

#30 Post by Malc » Fri Apr 02, 2004 9:03 pm

Aha, the used Fanbelt, ahem. Tis a bit 'bolt the stable door after horse has bolted' but i remember thinking before we had the old lump out that the fanbelt looked a tad slack and past its first flush of yoof. Next time the belt eneterd my mind it was already on, job done. Must have been whilst I was struggling with the under manifold fixings. On the positive side, good job it wasn't a Sprint or 1850, as we know, they don't like being boiled. Have a good check of the hoses, these are often things that go west after the disturbance of an engine change. TDC Spares Leeds has all the OHV Hoses <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
