greasy rack
greasy rack
set about 'servicing' and repainting the steering rack for orange last night.

seems quite clean under all the gunge...

after pulling the gaitors off i was pleased to find the grease was clean, apparently negligable wear on the rack itself and the ball things at each end were well greased and corrosion free.

going to continue the clean up and re-greasing later, and maybe even stick a pic on for the crack, only grease I have knocking around is the lithium wheel bearing stuff, I guess this is more than suitable?

Re: greasy rack
Lithium grease is used in CV joints, you should be using normal grease on wheel bearings, steering racks should also use regular grease.

Re: greasy rack
steve - ta, but lithium grease is the high temp stuff which is meant for wheel bearings ?! 'normal' grease will melt at hi temps, so surely a bit ploppy for wheel bearings?

lithium grease also ideal for cv joints as they're fast moving and also get hot.

I was just looking for any down-sides to using lithium grease on a steering rack, cant see any really, unless someone can shed some other light on it?

ps - looks like lithium grease that was already used on the rack

Re: greasy rack
You know what, ignore me. I was thinking of that graphite type black stuff, thats what goes in CV joints. You are absolutley right LM grease for everything on a Dolly.

Re: greasy rack
Molybdenum grease for CV joints. Horrid black stuff. Bit like the stuff they use to make sticky bombs in Saving Private Ryan.
Re: grease
yup. ZX-13. When I was an apprentice, I left a tube of that on the floor, with the end off (I was in the middle of a job that needed it). My supervisor walked over to see how I was getting on, stepped right on the middle of the tube, one half went up the outside of his trousers, the other sprayed up into his crotch. The other guys started laughing at him; to save face he started rollocking me, just as HIS supervisor came out and asked him why he wasn't wearing coveralls....

He gave me a crap mark, but I didn't care, because then I was a "known man" who had become workshop legend that afternoon.

I am going to work for him again in November, as his right hand man.....hey, that was fourteen years ago....you can't hold a grudge that long....or can you?

Re: grease
I'd present him with a tube on your first day whilst wearing ear defenders. If he doesn't laugh, you know the next few months are going to be hard work!
Re: grease
Unfortunately, Snowdrop's steering rack is one of the failure points when it failed the MoT today. Good job Steve W has racks in stock. I've gotta replace the track rod ends as well as one of them has too much play.
