bound to be layers of varnish on them, nitro mors will take a few layers off, otherwise lots of sanding need. i'd use a sander until you get near the wood, then finish by hand.

a trip to b & q for possibly some wood stain if you're feeling adventurous (although most people probably wouldnt bother), and some tough duty varnish, possibly floor stuff even, which you can brush on (use a good quality fine bristle brush), or if you have a compressor etc then spraying will potentially give the best finish.

someone used yacht varnish, i sell the "International" variety, for boats surprisingly enough, there are lots of different types. the difference mainly being additives to improve performance in harsh environments, hardness etc, but yacht stuff is more expensive.

i'd go with a good 3 coats by brush, or maybe 5 coats if you're spraying.

a nice xmas project for you. if yours turn out well you can finish mine for me if you like!
Purchased a can of PLASTI-KOTE polyurethane clear gloss varnish.About a fiver-ish.
Rub down between coats.Apply 3 or 4 coats.
