Your standard battery is a type 038 which does the job. You are limited to variants by the space available - its quite easy to have a bigger one which ends up chafing on the air filter; not good. Never bought a different new one to use so can't comment beyond this as I've only used spare 'other' batteries on cars I've bought without one temporarily. Even a TR7 one doesn't fit satisfactorily.

Mine is a heavy duty Lucas 038/4 bought from Halfords which has lasted for 4 or 5 years with no problems.

Give It Large

A type 015 Battery can be used if you want to go up the range a bit. a type 038 is standard fitment, but an 015 was always listed as 'Heavy Duty'. Physically an 015 is the same size as an 038, an important consideration. IIRC an 015 has a slightly higher CCAE amp rating, a bit more ooomph on starting.

When I bought mine I was told that Lucas no longer uses the desgnation 015 - the standard battery is 038 and the heavy duty one is 038/4.

Part Numbers

#8 Post by Malc » Sat Mar 20, 2004 8:35 pm

I don't know what the Lucss numbering sequence is, I was working of the Unipart Numbering sequence. I've got a Nov 1986 Unipart Samson battery cat here, it say

Recomended GBY5606 = Cold Start Perf 340 Amps. Interestingly, this cross refers to BBMS Type 015. This means according to the Unipart Book, Dolly 1850 & Sprints were never fitted with the Type 038 Battery

Nothing is lited as a Heavy duty application for the Sprint & 1850.
Twas along time ago since I sold Batteries on a daily basis <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D">
