Dodgy Oil Pressure
Dodgy Oil Pressure
Over the last few weeks, whenever I started my track Sprint from cold, the oil pressure would rise very slowly to around 20-25 psi then after maybe 30 seconds or so it would gradually creep up to it's usual 70 psi. Last weekend I started it up and the oil pressure light wouldn't go out and the gauge reading 0 psi (even with a tickle of the throttle). <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

So I drained the oil, binned the filter & removed the oil pump. Re-fitted with a known good pump, new oil & filter, started it up again and still the oil light stayed on, but this time only for a short while, then rising slowly as before. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

Time to take the sump off, me thinks. So I removed all the sump bolts & dropped the sump. The first thing I noticed was the oil strainer/pick-up pipe had worked itself loose. So instead of drawing oil up through the strainer it was drawing air. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> (sigh of relief).

Anyway, I took some piccies of one of the mains & one of the big end bearings. There is slight scoring & pitting to them. Do I fit a new set of each whilst I'm there ?

Where's the cheapest place to get them I usually use Rimmers. I need .030 U/S big ends & .020 U/S mains.

Oh! I forgot to say, don't forget to remove the dipstick when dropping the sump off. It makes life a lot easier. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">
While yer in there....
You now the answer to this....its daft not to do them all
as they are so cheap and what is it gonna cost you if one picks up? Shells are sacrificial...
Moss do them....one in Bristol....cos they are the same as TR7 ones.
Yea, I think I already knew the answer.

Cheers Jon, I keep forgetting about Moss's as they don't stock much (if any) Sprint bitz anymore. I'll pick some up on my way home from work on Friday me thinks.

Canley
Canley also have them, 15 quid plus P&P a set.

It's silly not to do them while everything's off, and those do look a little pitted and have slight wear marks - I might push my luck on a car I'd use once a week for shopping, but anything else I'd replace them before seeing the road again.

Re: Canley
I only use it occasionally but then it's revving at 6000 rpm most of the time. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> I will be changing them as they don't cost much.

By the way, I have a set of big ends .010 U/S if anyone needs them.

Re: Oil pump...
seems to be a bit close to the steering rack. ie. nigh on touching. Engine mounts are on the correct way although sagging slightly.

Any ideas ?
Bearings
I received my big ends from Rimmers today, good delivery time as I only ordered them yesterday lunchtime. I know I often moan about their prices but they've always had a good delivery service. They even send the right parts...most of the time. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

I tried Canley Classics for bearings & they wanted £37 for the mains. I asked the guy if that was the correct price...it was. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Anyway, Fitchetts sell them for £19 so hopefully they will be here tomorrow.

Any ideas as to why my pump is so close ?

Low Rider
My monies on ya Gearbox mount has gone south. On XAA the Oil pump was a Natts Knacker away for the rack. the Gearbox mount was a soggy oily mess. New gearbox mount really increased the clearance <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Re: Low Rider
Cheers Malc, I'm pretty sure the g/box mount is ok, but it's got to be that or the engine mounts hasn't it ?

The mains turned up today, from Fitchetts, so I'm off down to the garage now to fit them. Should be able to take it for a spin tomorrow. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

As a matter of interest, why are plain washers used on the strainer as opposed to spring washers ?
