Ugly Cars

#31 Post by Leeds Sprint » Wed Jul 12, 2006 11:07 am

Wow. Some real unexpected depth of feeling on the whole Citroen DS thing. I never would have pegged you as a Citroenphope Julian.

I agree that the DS styling is a bit ugly. But I like Ugly cars. That's why I like the Volvo 480 and the Alfa Romeo Spyder Duetto. Looking wrong makes them Kitch.

I think my favourite ugly car has to be the AMC Pacer.
www.amcpacer. ...

Anyone else got any nominations for the ugly car award?
Ugly....

#32 Post by Jon Tilson » Wed Jul 12, 2006 12:12 pm

is a whole new thread and on the general section as its not dolly related....

As to the DS, well I suppose personal taste plays a big part but the DS saloon is okay IMHO. It was very futuristic in the mid fifties. As to the safari or estate versions I couln't agree more...it looks rubbish.
But then so do most other estate lash ups of presentable salloons.....Rovers P6 Estoura is hideous for example and even the Farina countryman is no great shakes, the farnham Ford Zodiac is butt ugly.
Good looking estates are dooable though and Triumphs efforts on the T2000 is fine in Mk1 and Mk2 form.
The Pug 405 and 406 is fine, but the old Laguna is gross, wheras the R21 savanah was passable.
Mk2 Granada is okay but the mk3 scorpio is nothing special, although in mk3 fish face form the estate looks better, or should I say less awful than the saloon.
I quite like the current Passat and most Volvos look better in estate form cos the rear window line on their salloons is a bad joke.
Of the newbies I reckon the 407 and Laguna now look better as estates, the C5 is equally hideous in both and the Audi Vw stuff is all passable. Beemers too.
Chris,
take yourself out and subject yourself to a neck shot!
Alfa duetto spyder ugly........? What in the world do you smoke and drive (apart from the obvious!)
No offence each to their own.

Tin,
you and I should get together and design something as we clearly are on the same length of wave.

Jonners,
I enjoy disagreeing with you because it's fun! Apart from the DS thing, your taste in shooting brakes Sir, is not far from mine!
saw an SZ at Duxford last weekend; reminded me of Clarkson's comment that it looked like a football boot!

Last one I saw was on the way to Le Mans when we stopped at an aire for lunch; bloke gets out dressed in full sparco nomex gear including the boots. About sixty gathered petrol heads all pointed and laughed.

Talking of hearses, what about the lovely allegro estate; they had to paint it orange to try to make it look less hearse like...and failed!

I much prefer the term 'shooting brake'...far more likely to offend the weak minded

But then we get onto the very silly cars made to look like estates; Cayenne, X5 etc...I mean, what are they all about. "Look at me" syndrome or what? Built for merchants!!

Much worse than cars with estate variants are the estate cars which have had attempts to make them appeal as cars. Range Rover Sports for example or that dreadful Suzuki X90. A car thats trying to be all things ends up as no thing in particular...

Few years ago when I was selling my Renault Spyder, bloke rings up and offers me a swap for an Alfa SZ.

Lets meet I say, as I have always liked stuff thats uncommon.

He turns up in SZ. Immaculate, full docs, one owner (him), absolutely unblemished, 3K on the clock. Fella even had every petrol receipt!

We go out in the Spyder - he loves it and is all over it.

My turn to take the SZ out.

What an utter donkey! Horrendous ride quality - everywhere on every surface. Bump steer. Appalling seats. Noisy arthritic engine with nothing below 4000rpm, numerous trim rattles - I could go on and on and on.

We return to my house - I bid him farewell having been as discrete as possible about my opinions of his pride and joy. He is very disappointed and still all over the Spyder. He offers me the SZ plus a grand. Then 3 grand. Then 5 grand. Finally, I am fed up and tell him that if he offered me 5 grand a month I still would not want his horrid car.

I will never forget his face. He was still ringing me weeks later, after the Spyder was long since sold, but he of course had had no joy at all moving his on.

Sorry to hijack the estate thread, but had to share that with you. He was probably the bloke in the nomex Alun.

I think you try the estate without the vinyl roof Mark. A sort of sports estate a la Scimitar is probably the way forward.

I think the Allegro estate looked better in applejack! Then again there is always the Spinks convertible!

The only good thing about the pre-73 tax exemption law is that it means that no Allegro will ever be classed as a historic vehicle...
Sadly it means that most Dolomites won't either.

And looking for a very cheap, simple LHD, for the Plymouth-Banjul Rally 2007...
