About 140 odd (I think it was a shade over) is the fastest I've seen on a speedo in a moving car... And I was behind the wheel.

Blew a seal at an indicated 135 ish in another car that really shouldn't be able to go that fast.

Taken 998 Minis off the speedo (needle sitting somewhere around the indicator and ign warning lamps), but that's only about 95 - 100 I think.

Blew a Skoda exhaust trying to ton up in a 4 speeder, was well into the red and a shade off the 100 when there was an almighty bang.

Been in another Skoda, 5 speeder, that got off the clock (about 11<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)"> down a very big hill.

Triumph wise I've had a Dolly 1300 up to just under a ton on the speedo downhill with twin carbs and no fan, and a 1300fwd up to and over 90 on the speedo on a downhill run (best not mention that too loudly in case the new owner hears me <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> ). Had the 2000 up to about 80 on the speedo very briefly to see if my balls were still planetoid titanium, but I backed off when the vibrations were shaking my root canal fillings out and the front was trying to go in all three physical planes at once!

Much though the sapling huggers might disagree, I'd rather have a car moving at 100+ than have the wheels doing 100+ a few inches from tarmac doing 0. Could be interesting to see what happened if jacks or stands gave way...

(There are no units of measurement in the above, or mention as to what plane of existence these experiences were had upon... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> )

I did 130 racing a 18 wheeler on a freeway in West Virginia once. It was quite bendy and I needed to apex all the corners to get round. as did the truck.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

about 125 is the fastest I've seen in my Sprint on the road

'I may have' Managed 140mph (the end of the speedo!) on my old GTI-6 coming back from carlisle with a fully loaded boot of beer, dog on the back seat and sleeping wife by my side, was still going but she woke up in time to give be a bollocking.

And I've maybe managed to hit the end of the Speedo in the Smart Toaster (120). Now that was a rush!

Featherweight 1974 Dolomite Sprint - Soon to be XE'd, NOS'd, Megasquirted and 5 linked Lash up to scare myself (and my wallet) senseless

2004 Smart Roadster (company car!!) - 698cc of turbo'd adrenaline fuelled rollerskate - destined to classic status thanks to Daimler Chrysler bean counters.

1997 Audi A4 2.6 to chill out after the above and fill with baby products.....

2005 Trek 1400 (ok its not a car but still fast) -
a bit like Lance Armstrong but slower and fatter
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p206.ezboard.com/bthetriumphdolo ... SMIFTER at: 10/3/06 2:19 pm

Re: Ive seen...
Sprint was 6000rpm in overdrive top. (Whatever that was because the speedo didn't work).

Bikes. Max was 190 on a blackbird. Probably a true 175.

Cerby. 160 so far.

Mini. 135. down hill. tail wind. Not bad for a 1600.
Is it 130 or 140 the clock runs to on the sprint, my memory escapes me! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Re: Ive seen...
Depends, early (like your pic) is 140, later is 130. Think they're the same on the 1850?

Was about to say 135 is good going for a Mini..

Then I realised if it's a 1600 you're either talking about a re-engined one, an A series taken to the maxium (which I think is around 1596cc), or that nasty BMW marketingmobile. I'm guessing it's the latter <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Now, anything much over a ton in a proper Mini is impressive, not so much from an engineering point of view, more from a "Do you have a sense of your own mortality" standpoint!
