not that much time, but a lot of fuel is wasted. All of those LGVs run along the M-way hard on the limiter (52 Mph, I think it is now (and apologies to Jod for when I said that this wasn't the case in the pub one night <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)"> ) but the speed is always a bit different. so if one truck is going at 51.8 mph, and one comes up behind at 52.2mph, the driver has the choice of overtaking very slowly, or constantly adjusting his speed to maintain his distance from the vehicle in front, which wastes a big load of fuel. Or at least that was the way it was explained to me.

Tickets aren't so bad. In the UK at least you generally need to be going inappropriately fast before the police will bother you (everyone does 80+mph on the motorway, they can't stop 100 people an hour) 
 
Speed cameras on the other hand...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

Summat wrong with your maths Dave. I wish there were 100 cars and hour going along the motorway - bliss. 
 
Assume a full motorway with everyone observing the 2 second rule (which everyone does of course!). That's 30 cars per minute per lane = 30 x 60 = 1800 cars per hour per lane. 3 lanes gives 1800 x 3 = 5400 cars per hour! 
 
Alternatively, 100 cars per hour = 1.6 per minute = 1 car every 36 seconds. I have occasionally driven on the M1 when I couldn't see more than 1 car ahead and behind. If only it was like that all the time.

Lane discipline. 
 
Those who feel it necessary to clog up the middle and outside lane, when there is an empty inside lane. 
 
M6 Toll is a classic example. Completely empty road. Some chopper sitting in the middle lane at 65. To pass him without breaking the highway code, you have to veer across two lanes and back again. Even after such excessive manouvering around the offender, he/she will still sit there in the middle lane - completely oblivious. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:"> 
 
I can see how one could be tempted to go up the inside, attract the attention of the driver and show him your favorite abusive gesture.

About 8 years ago, I had a conversation with my girlfriend about how I reckoned you'd massively reduce congestion if everyone had better lane discipline on the motorways. A few months ago, I heard on the radio that the AA (I think) had done some research... They reckoned if everyone drove in the correct lanes during peak times, it would free up 700 miles of motorway lanes nationally. Yes, 700 miles!! FFS!

Just an illustration with the policeman on the motorway. Usually a lot more than 100 cars an hour will go past at 80 and you won't get caught. But when I was working in Virginia, I was aware of the local police. I guess they get to keep the money they make from those 
 
"sir, I think your stoplight is broken." 
"is it?" 
-Smash- 
"I'm gonna need to ticket you for that"

With you completely on the middle lane morons Adam. I no longer go round the f###wits and do pass on the left because (to paraphrase): 
 
'Pass only on the right' is law in exactly the same way as 'keep left when not overtaking'. I.E. not one little bit. The highway code is a code not law. Breaking the code only becomes an offence if it is dangerous, reckless etc. 
 
The highway code says you should ensure the lane you are changing to is clear. It makes no distinction about whether that lane is on your left or on the right. Mr middle-lane-numbnuts-smythe therefore should check his left shoulder should he miraculously decide to pull over on me as I pass. If he doesn't check, he's done the dangerous driving not me. 
 
Which is safer, passing one dumbf##k with his head up his arse the wrong side or crossing four lanes of carriageway? Hard to prove I'd say. 
 
Given that the dumbf##k has clearly got his head up his arse there's just as much chance of him pulling across into me if I pass him on the right as if I pass him on the left, either way he's not paying attention. 
 
Weaving, repeatedly changing lanes to pass left or right, thats a different matter.

I don't see it as undertaking, more the lane I was in just happened to be travelling faster, as it would in say a traffic jam, and lets face it most motorways are a traffic jam, so I reckon its ok.....

i do go out of my way to 'undertake' these @rseholes deliberately, before pulling in front of them and unloading a suitable amount of screenwash on them. that is my fave trick of all time, and it really p1sses people off.

My favorite trick is to pull in front of these middle lane morons just as I change from 4th to 5th in the V8, causing a sizable flame to come out of my exhaust. If they were dozing away, that soon wakes them up!

Leave the car in gear, full throttle, kill the ignition for a couple of seconds, then switch back on.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> 
 
Actually that one's probably better for getting rid of tailgaters.
