Before the engine went back in i had the radiator out and put a hose in each way until i got clear water out and then topped up with the correct antifreeze mix. If the radiator is full of crud that will not come out with a hose i think in the long run i would rather a re-core. If i took it out and took it to a rad suppliers would they just leak test it or can they check flow.
To be honest, with the recore costing as much as it does, I'd be inclined to try some cheaper options first. Prehaps you can borrow a known good item from someone.
Come to think of it the radiator that kept my car cool is sat in my lockup awaiting my car to put it back in. You're not in the bath/bristol area are you?

Dave , thanks for the offer but i am in the Heathrow area.
I am as cautious as you as i do not want to spend out a fortune on the radiator only to find out it is something else.
The water pump was not actually new , it was recon. Could something have been put back together incorrectly?

If the head/gasket is at fault are there any other clues except oil in the header tank?

Thanks
Impellar spinning on its shaft, catches every now and again to circulate but isn't tight enough to circulate quickly enough?
Does it overheat whilst it is standing still or when the car is under load?

Head Gasket....

causing over heating wil show up as small bubbles appearing in the header tank, increasing in rate with revs. Ive cured this on 2 cars by retorquing the head bolts.
Feltham Rads round the back of Moss will check your radiator flow for you.
recore should be around £100. Sounds like a blocked rad if its bubbling, or head gasket!

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try it again over the next day or two and see what happens when i run it on the drive for some a reasonable length of time.
