Sprint publicised top speed is 116mph, which works out as the direct drive number.

Inputting the numbers to this thingy (did this from memory, someone with the numbers might like to correct it) gives a notional top speed of 150mph with the OD engaged. The OD was designed IIRC to reduce fuel consumption for a given speed rather than raise the top speed.

For reference I had a 1 litre Kia Picanto on the redline in top last night. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Yes but the engine will never have enough power to keep turning to its red line in OD top. For example top speed in my 1850 is 90-100 yet it wont be on the red line doing those speeds.
Have you tried going faster than the manufacturer's top speed? A mate of mine got his completely standard mini 1000 (specc'ed top speed 68mph) to and indicated 98 mph. I know because I was in the car at the time.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x">

For once...

Adam is on the right track...
The top speed potential of a car is a function of power available, rolling resistance and drag. Manufacturers know what the drag and power is so can work out the top speed and gear the car so that peak power coincides as near as possible with the theoretical top speed. This is known as ideal gearing. You can see how good a job the BL engineers did as an 1850 dolly will just about hit the red line in top at 6000rpm and 18 mph per 1000 is about the gearing on 155 tyres and 3.63 diff.
So 6K rpm = 108 mph.
Road tests of the time had 100 to 105 and then I think the final autocar was high 90's. They must have had a bad one for that. All mine have easilly done the ton when they were younger.
If the power band is fairly flat at the top the revs drop for overdrive may mean the car holds the same top speed or drops a couple of mph. Most dolly owners were happy to cruise at 90 in o.d when plod used to ignore the 70 limit
On a Sprint we have a slightly higher diff and 175 tyes and IIRC around 19.5 in direct top....so the Sprint was set up as a 120 mph car....and is very close to that.

Tuned Sprints do go a bit better and Ive had 125 or so out of mine in days of yore with STR91, sports zorst and 185 tyres. That was in overdrive and there was a bit more to come but I ran out of road. Thats about par for 150 bhp....about the same as a P6 Rover which also does about 125 mph in manaul form.
Modern cars are better than our Sprints really only in terms of drag. As an engine it was well ahead of its time...and still stands up with the figures of normal stuff today....Yes I know turbos and VTECS do beter but I'm talking the std stuff like zetecs and ecotecs. If we had a 0.3 CD like a mk2 Astra a Sprint would be a 140 mph car, like the 2.0 GTE was.....something to think about.
"Modern cars are better than our Sprints really only in terms of drag" and transmission losses too, but that's not so significant. And cruising at 90 in o/d top is still nice early on a sunday morning, with plenty left to go uphills at the same speed.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> (standard engine)
The Sprint Axle will fit the car but the propshaft will then be fractionally too long, although I have run the car without shortening the prop and it didnt hurt anything.

You can't swap brake bits from the Sprint axle to the "Banjo" type axle, they just wont fit.

Changing to the Sprint axle on my 115 bhp 1500 Man/OD made OD Top almost redundant, even with the extra power there is too much drag at 110MPH for the little pushrod engine to turn the higher ratios. Still very handy in OD 3rd though.
