What annoyed me today.....

Well a decision has been made to move away from Ezboard, in fact the decision was made quite some time ago. The snag is that it's taking a long time to set up a new server, install the software and get it all up and running. It's frustrating really, we'll probably end up having to renew the Ezboard subscription if we can't get our new site off the ground soon. I did have a couple of offers of assistance from people, which I wanted to take up, but as I've not heard any more from them I can only assume that they've got tied up with other things (which I can fully understand!).<br>

It is becoming clear to me that environmentalism and accountancy are incompatible. Now I’m not a weirdy beardy eco-warrior but I like to do as much as I can for green issues and recycling despite driving cars which pump out nasty exhaust fumes….. I work for a relatively small company with 20 office staff and I’ve set up various schemes for recycling in particular paper because we generate a large amount of waste paper each month. It’s all collected free by the council and everyone’s happy.<br>
Our current A4/A3 paper cost is around £45 a month and for just an extra twenty quid each month we can buy 100% recycled paper making the process entirely green. Unfortunately our accounts department don’t see it that way and want me to justify that extra cash. Although I can see their point of view this annoys me because it’s not very far-sighted.<br>
I may point out that the company has a turnover of around £8 million by the way.<br>
So what annoyed me today is that a lot of people, many of whom have kids and I don’t, are not really all that bothered about the environment. If I didn’t do this here no bugger else would. Should I care? I have too much of a conscience not to I’m afraid.<br>

Ooh, something I can use my job for, as I actually work at a paper mill.<br>

100% recycled paper is of lower quality than new paper, as the fibres used to make the paper degrade each time they are pulped. As such it's usually only used for newspapers and tissue. <br>
<br>
As long as the wood used to make the paper comes from a sustainably managed forest (most are these days, and it usually says so on the packet), the process is not too bad carbon emissions-wise as several new trees are planted every time one is chopped down.

I thought the environmental issues with using "new" paper was due to the chemicals used to bleach the paper? Feel very free to correct me, it's just something I remember hearing in a pub conversation years ago...

Sadly I agree; the building industry is full of products which have re-cycled alternatives, from recycled plastic dpcs through to external paving made from recycled glass. Guess what? Without exception they all cost more in their recycled form than the raw material counterpart and we aren't talking about £20, its often double or more. The reps (often in their M5 beemers!) simply smile and tell us we have to pay the privledge of using recycled materials because of the kudos it gives the project and meeting governmental 'sustainability' targets!!<br>

Perhaps if the reps turned up with the samples in a small economical van, electric vehicle or smart car I might take them seriously and specify the product. I cannot justify the extra costs to my clients so that the halfwit with a suit can sustain their lavish (more lavish than I that is) lifestyle!<br>

By comparison I took six bin liners full of crushed aluminium cans for recycling last week (most picked up street rubbish) on behalf of my Mother and £15 is now on its way to Cancer care charities. I doubt the besuited halfwit would consider entertaining such a notion!

Bleach is nasty stuff, but due to the residual ink in the fibres in recycled paper you need to add bleach to that as well, just not quite so much as for new paper. Hydrogen Peroxide is the preferred bleach for paper as it breaks down into water and oxygen after use.

The paper I was thinking of getting is made by a company called Evolve. have you heard of them Dave? It reckons to be indistinguishable from "ordinary" copier paper.

The paper we make at my place of work is pretty special, so the only relationship I have with office paper is the stuff that I keep putting into my printer to make rubbish reports with. <br>

If you're interested, type "portals bathford" into google and all will be revealed. About where I work, anyway.<br>
<br>
But looking at their website, I think what they do is "sieve" the woodpulp so only the long fibres, which are best for making paper, are used. That's why they waste that much recovered fibre, and possibly why it's a bit pricier.<br>

I'm all too familiar with Evolve, actually made by M-Real, the top of the paper merchanting chain I drive for.<br>

Good gear by all accounts, particularly the 'business' version which is probably bleached even more then the 'office' one in the lovely lurid pink box.<br>

...according to my BMI (32 point something) I am already obese! <br>

However, when walking I do not have to pendulum my weight from side to side to get my thighs to pass each other and trousers with a 34" waist are too big without a belt.<br>

Apparently I should be some five stone lighter, which is just daft.
