Re: Speedo
Thanks for that lads. The spa one will do everything I need and a little more. The stack stuff reads like a bmw options list. unit costs £3 but then by the time you have put the bare essentials on its up to £800!

I'll probably go the spa route I think. How much was it from spa direct Darren? I haven't had a chance to call them and does it come with everything I'll need to get it working?

Cheers.
SPA and HiSpec
I've ordered the tacho/speedo from Rallynuts as they can do it for £295 + VAT. Its shown as £293 on SPAs website but apparently you can't get them at that price as they haven't updated there site for ages. Its the black dial, 0-9000 rpm version.

Also dropped a hub assembly and standard wheel into HiSpec in Dartford today. I should know by the end of the week what disc size and calipers will go in there. The head honcho was very helpful and is going to take a load of measurements and stick them in his CAD computer. Sounded good to me! Apparently the shape of the standard wheel doesn't help as it has that large step on the inside which reduces space quite a bit. I could have taken one of my minilites down and got some bigger discs in there but I'd like to have the ability to put the standard alloys back on at some point in the future.

Not long now. God it seems only a few weekends away before Mallory. Oh it is..................

Brakes
Dont bother about the standard Sprint wheels. They will restrict your sizes too much. Always go for the biggest and best within regs. If you dont do this the first time you will redo the job later and it will end up costing more. I am currently using 10" vented discs with 4 pot Willwood calipers on the front under Superlite 13" rims.

Re: Brakes
Scott,
I agree with Stephen, it will be VERY difficuilt to get a BIG brake set up inside the standard Sprint alloy wheel. I am also using 4 spot Wilwood calipers with 250mm (10") X 23mm vented disc bolted to the standard hub. My wheels are 13x7 BBS 3 piece which have no well, ie the inside of the rim is flat.

My brother (Philip) is using 240mm disc with Volvo 4 piston caliper. The caliper mount holes need to be elongated to match the Sprint upright. This car also runs 13x7 wheeels but they a single piece cast wheel.

Mark.

PS. Both of these brake set ups are using the original Group 2 sub axles (which are longer) and group 2 vertical links.

Re: Brakes
The Sierra brake set up I have has 240mm vented discs which needed a little bit of material taken off the calipers to clear standard Sprint Alloys so I guess depending on calipers thats on the limit of what you can fit within Sprint Wheels. Also the castings seem to vary - some wheels clear the caliper and some just touch it.

With my 5 spoke Compomotives on there is loads more space due to the flatter inside rims - Like Mark has found I reckon another 5 to 10mm bigger disc could go in with these without a problem.

You might want to consider dumping Sprint wheels for other reasons too - some of these wheels are 30 years old.

Re: Brakes
Hmmmm. Now you have me thinking.

I'll see what he comes back with. If the discs are prohibitively small, I'll get my minilites to him.

Thanks for the advice people.

PS: My other reason for taking the standard wheel along was so that HiSpec would have a listed fitment for the Dolomite Sprint because at present, they haven't. Anyone running standard wheels and not necessarily using their car for competition use would then know how much and exactly what they could get from HiSpec without having to guess and bodge together something that might fit.

Do you Wilwood boys have any problems with 'knock off' or caliper flex? Which specific caliper do you use?

Cheers.
Brakes
I am using Dynalite IIA 1.75 dia piston on 250 x 25 vented discs on the front and use the Dolomite caliper on the rear (1.75) with the same disc and a 7/8 tandem m/c. At present there is too much braking to the front, so I am fitting some Ford Escort front calipers to the rear to balance it up a bit better. I use carbon metallic pads all round.

Re: Brakes
I need to go and check for sure, but I think that my calipers are Superlites. They are 4 piston variety, but they have the smaller pistons, which I think are 1 1/4" diameter. The rear brakes are still drums, but VERY heavily modified. (they are full of holes in the drum and back plate).
I am using 13/16" master cylinder, which I think is from a Ford Capri. The car has suffered from severve pad "knock off", even with a stub axle strenghter fitted, but I have now fitted a residual valve to the front brake line which has reduced any problems to an exceptible level. The (Wilwood) valve holds a small pressure (10 psi??) in the brake line to attempt to hold the pads in contact with the disc.

Re: Brakes
Well. Haven't spoke with Geoff yet. I phoned today to find out how all the measuring had gone. I was told he was under a car and should call back in half an hour. Called back and kept getting the answer machine. Not a good start. I'll call back on Monday and see what the score is.

Car is now on the ramps getting refitted. All brake and fuel pipes are being removed and renewed. The bottom is going to get waxoyled whilst its up there as well.

The SPA tacho has arrived and there is also a nice AP racing clutch to go in.

Thanks for the details on your braking systems Mark and Stephen.
Re: Brakes
Well, still no answer from HiSpec. Customer service is very poor (as has been mentioned by Phil before). I should have been told what was possible on Friday, got through on the phone and was told to call back on Saturday, it would be done by then.

Called back on Saturday, told that Geoff was inspecting someones car and could I call back in half an hour. Called back 30 mins later and just got a recorded message.

Called on Monday morning. Told that he hadn't done it yet but I would get a call by lunchtime. They took my mobile number. Needless to say, no call.

Tried calling on Tuesday morning. Constantly engaged so I sent a fax detailing my number again just in case they had taken it down wrong. No call by end of play Tuesday.

Phoned up today, got through after 20 attempts over 3 hours. Told that they had got my fax (why didn't they call me??) but geoff was under some guys car who had come up from Southampton and she would make sure he called me when he came in. No call by end of play today.

I wouldn't mind if the guy had said that it would be ten days before he could get it sized and then two weeks for completion but to say that it would be done last friday and then get the run around<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:">

Looks like I'll be running standard brakes for a while with race pads. Oh dear.
Look's as though they haven't changed there attitude to customer's yet,
Bigger premises Bigger ######s.

Mention your car is being Track tested/ Photo shoot in so many Day's and you need the brakes before that date,
Or you'll simply go elsewhere.

Schizophrenic Brakes
I don't know where to stand on this. After all the disillusionment of the past week, I called them this morning, got through straight away, spoke to the man himself and he had done it. He apologised and started giving me some excuse about getting an order out for a large team, stopped himself halfway and said that it was still no excuse and that he was sorry!

Results are this.

As said previously by others better informed than me, standard wheels are pants. Forget them. Maximum rotor size with HiSpec calipers would be 240mm. He went on to say that the he wouldn't recommend using their calipers with a disc so small as the shape of the disc under the caliper would mean that alot of the disc wouldn't actually be biting the caliper.

My minilite is on its way down to him so we shall see what he can tuck under there. I mentioned other racers having minilite style 13" wheels with 254mm (or thereabouts) rotors and dynalite willwood set ups and he reckons that he can usually get a 280mm disc under the same wheel with his calipers. We shall wait (probably for the next decade) to see.

On a separate note, the car is coming along nicely now so I am told. Slight departure from my original plans. I have now decided to have it prepared purely as a track car. Someone at Jigsaw is going to create a fresh wiring loom for all the bits I need. If I'd stayed with wanting it MOT'able, they would have worked with the existing loom and I don't want the headache of possible freak electrical mishaps due to knobby 30 year old wiring.
