This weeks update

Spend my half day allowance this morning replacing the halfshaft oil seals and bolting the brakes, hubs and diff cover (with a new gasket) onto the axle.

Well it would appear that the Phantom Grip does indeed turn the axle into a limited slip unit, turn one wheel and the turns in the same direction, turn the pinion and both wheels turn at the same time in the same direction! Good stuff! It works as a diff locker for certain, I wont know how much slip it allows until the car is roadworthy though.
Not to difficult, of course I used all the recommended Leyland tools (not!).

Pull out the Halfshafts so they disengage from the diff, Unbolt the bearing caps on the Diff. Unbolt the pinion nut and pull off the pinion flange (should come off really easily).

I cheated in the next bit, your supposed to use a BL tool which expands the casing but I've devised a crude but effective alternative method. VERY gently tap the end of the pinion shaft and the Pinion will mesh with the crownwheel gear and the diff will 'pop' out of the bearing caps. Be careful or you can damage the CWP doing this - its not a particularly professional method but it works. Refittting is a reversal of removal but make sure you use the spacer shims on the pinion that were fitted to the 2000 axle. The 2000 has a solid spacer compared to a collapsible spacer on the Sprint and I dont think they are interchangeable so swap the lot over. Then torque up the bearing caps first, then the Pinion nut (with the flange refitted) and it should be done.

The manual goes into depth about setting up the shims to get the correct pinion backlash but in the true spirit of fudging I'm going to suck it and see - it feels pretty good but if I have to I'll get it set up properly when the car is finished.

The only extra bit for you is you will have to unbolt the crownwheel and bolt it back onto your LSD.
Cheers, I may look at doing that tomorrow. I'm off all week so plenty of days to choose from. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I know that the phantom grip something or other dooo daaaa is 10% where as a full on LSD is about 60%...

From what I know, that means not very good. Sorry <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Where did you hear that?

Fact or Myth?

I'm going to try it anyway even if it is as a guinea pig.

Thanks Guy's - I can't help thinking that the Nissan article may have been sponsored!

But then the Club Triumph discussion doesnt seem to be based on any facts, just the word of someone who's welded their diff up.

Time will tell if it works, I'm convinced it won't be near as good as a proper LSD but its how much better than not being there at all that interests me.

Proof is in the pudding. I could always weld the diff up of course<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Fitted mine today. All went really well. See what you meant by the collapsible spacer G, on the Sprint Pinion. The only thing I couldn't do is put the diff cover back on, as the gasket disintegrated when I took it off.

There testing it on front wheel drive cars which I'd imagine the force needed to lock the diff is far less than a proper car (RWD)

Comparing a quiaffe and a Phantom Grip is like comparing a Tropical Fruit to a dried out raisin. So you can't even compare a phantom Grip to a Quiaffe.

OBX I can't say what it will be like and how long it will last and if OBX will even warrant their warranty they have on it. OBX did have problems in the past and customer service obviously still needs help.

If you don't mind spending the money for a quiaffe get it. I have one in my car and love it. Install wasn't too bad just very important to make sure it's shimmed properly. I ended up trying it with the stock shim which was too tight so I ordered every smaller shim that the dealer was able to get. Then just split the difference of the amount of shims I had till I got one that was right since it's impossible to measure and know without installing it.

The phantom is a decent piece for those not wanting to spend the money on a better piece. It works but doens't work 100% I had a phantom grip and still couldn't get the 2 wheel burnouts when needed. It worked sometimes but not always. If the ground was uneven at all forget it. I even had problems in the burnout box at the track before with it. The Quiaffe is a really nice piece and will last longer then the trans. No need to worry about a diff pin blowing out taking the trans out either like the phantom grip piece.

Might want to talk to a few OBX people that have it installed on their car on here. Maybe one of them can say if they like it or not. Find out how much abuse they gave it etc. I know my quiaffe holds up great with a daily driven 419hp and 427 tq car. So far no problems at all. Should be a good bit more HP this spring once I get a few more parts that have been waiting to get installed on the car.
Interesting post - cheers George.

Adam - if anything I'd have thought an LSD on a fwd car has more work to do as it steers as well as drives and it loses traction much easier than a rwd car as its pulling rather than pushing..

Like I suggested i have no preconceptions, if the phantom grip is a load of crap in practice I shall say so (and say so to the suppliers and manufacturers too). If it works I'll say that too!

As a professional design engineer is part of my job to question why something is done a certain way and try different approaches to solving old problems. Sometimes trying the new untested techniques and challenging sceptiscm pays dividends, sometimes it just doesnt work and you get egg on face. But if you dont try, you never make progress.

I treat my car in much the same way - many of the things i'm doing have never been tried before. Some wont work, some will work brilliantly.

Can we park the Phantom Grip thing for now though please (unless you want to start a new thread) and I'll report back when the car is mobile.

Cheers

G

you still after a quick rack? Why not cut the arms where the track rod ends fit to the up rights and then weld the circular part back on half way down. So there half the length, you'll get lock to lock much quicker.

That sounds like a good plan to me
