Thanks Graeme. Licence arrived in the post today along with my confirmation of entry for Silverstone with the MGCC on the 10th April. Need to get hold of a transponder quickly though as it is one thing I've totally forgotten about.

I saw the snapped cam today. If they ever resurrect that program, "How do they do that?" I might send in an application for Parcelforce and its cam snapping skills. I'm sure that when they see the word 'Fragile' they like to test how fragile it is! Idiots. Looks like Mark might be commissioning a run of 50 cams for Sprints that you can then have profiled to your requirements.
Camshaft

#92 Post by Stephen Grellet » Sun Mar 28, 2004 10:56 pm

I think the L1 cams were for the Lotus Twin cam engine, and as such are possibly an older design. Also as the T/Cs were 8 valve hemi head as opposed to 16 valve pent roof. I use a Cosworth BD4 grind and it works very well. It is very similar to the STR139 grind, apart from a couple of degrees duration either way. Perhaps the STR 139 was originally copied from a BD4

I think that that the L1 is very similar to the STR139. I keep meaning to look at the KC book when I pop over to Jigsaw but keep forgetting. The profile has been used in a racing sprint engine before but that's as much as I know.
Brakes

#94 Post by Carsreunited » Fri Apr 02, 2004 11:25 pm

Right.

Picked up the brakes from Hi-Spec at 8pm last night. HiSpec are currently working until 10pm at night at the moment to try and work through a backlog of orders. Despite the aggravation I have had, I am pleased with their customer care when face to face. My feeling is that they are still trying to run what has been a family run business for the last 15 years as a family run business despite a massive increase in demand that they have run out of family to keep pace with! I would recommend them as long as you are prepared to allow them 7 weeks to turn around a custom order and you don't expect someone to answer the phone when you call!

As far as final specs go, my minilites (13x5.5j) are slightly dished but not as bad as the standard Sprint wheels.

I have 260mm x 25mm vented and grooved discs, 4 pot calipers (R114-4) with 1.5" diameter pistons, Ferodo DS3000 pads and some ATE Super Blue Racing fluid. This fluid has a dry boiling point of 536 degF and a wet boiling point of 392 degF. Exact caliper details can be seen here.

Costs were:

R114-4 Conversion (Callipers, Discs, Brackets) £430.00
Ferodo DS3000 pads £68.00
2 Litres of Racing Blue Brake fluid £36.00
Front braided hose set £30.00
VAT £98.70

Total HiSpec bill £662.70

Replacement discs are approx £65 each so I am told.

Also got my tyres fitted today at Adams and Page in High Wycombe. I decided to go for the supersoft compound of the AO32R's. Depending on how quickly this compound wears will be the deciding factor on whether I go for the standard compound next time around! Competitors in the series get £10 a tyre back from Yokohama at the end of the series upon production of bills from approved suppliers.

4xAO32r SS (inc VAT, valves and balancing) £262.97
I haven't deducted the £40 I get back later in the year yet.

With all this excitement I'm trying to get over the fact that the car isn't going to be ready for Mallory or Silverstone. The cam still isn't finished and there is still around 1 weeks worth of labour left to get the thing put together. Oh well, I'm just going to have to be patient!

Previous Total: £11734.13

New Total: £12659.80

Scott - you must be 29 and a half by now & aging rapidly with those bills. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">
very good Martin.

The scary thing is that at last count, only 7.5k of the bill is money I have spent on Jigsaw invoices. God knows what I've been spending the rest on.

Its getting a bit embarrasing now sticking all the costs up. I'm one of those people who never checks his balance at an atm because I don't like to know how much money I shouldn't have spent that month! I'm going to have to pull the bare essentials costs out of this so that people can have a better idea of what they can go racing on rather than my impulse/luxury peformance goods I have duped myself into buying!

I'm going to make sure I get the use of it once its done. I think I might even get buried in it one day!

Thats some seriously pricey balljoints - are they just standard items?

Did you have to go for 13x5.5" rims? I would have thought 13x6" would be a better fit (less sidewall movement).

Also I think you might be surprised just how quickly the supersoft tyres wear out! I understood the SS compound was intended for sprinting and hillclimbing where the tyres barely get up to temperature.

I've dug out 4 valve spring upper retainers for you - I'll stick them in the post via Mark.

Cheers
Well,

#98 Post by Carsreunited » Sat Apr 03, 2004 6:52 pm

The wheels are second hand items and were a bit of a cost saving incentive. However, I think I will purchase some superlites in the size you have suggested towards the end of this year as the wheels I have look tidy from a distance but a little bit dog eared close up. I'm not allowed in the regs to go bigger than 6J anyway.

As for the ball joints, I hadn't really checked until now but as the price is 50% more than Rimmers then I will ask Mark if they are non standard items. I'll do a bit of a tyre spotting next week but I believe that others do run the SS compound. Worst comes to the worst, I'll stick like glue through the bends in the first race!

Thanks for the retainers. I'll sort something out with you at Anglesey.
Blinkin brakes!!!!!

#99 Post by Carsreunited » Sun Apr 18, 2004 3:02 pm

If you thought I'd taken the least stressful route of getting my car done then you are wrong. After all the hassle I had with getting the brakes, the saga continues.

HiSpec hadn't included the high tensile bolts I needed to go through disc to carrier. I called them on the 6th April and asked them to send the bolts. Again, they apologised for not including them and said they would send them straight out. When they hadn't arrived at Jigsaw on the 12th I decided to pay them a visit and pick them up personally.

Got the usual apologies and Geoffs wife gave me the impression they were in a jiffy bag waiting to go out (but couldn't find it). Geoff gave me some nuts and bolts which I then delivered to Mark the following morning. 1st thing was the nut was too small for the bolt !!!, 2nd thing was, after Mark had sourced the right size bolts and nuts later that day and got the whole lot bolted together, the caliper and fluid return pipe was fouling the inside of the wheels!

As you know, HiSpec had supposedly measured everything up so that precisely this wouldn't happen. Faced with the prospect of sending the whole lot back and asking for a refund, asking for it to be rectified and wasting at least another week or working around the problem at my expense I have decided to do the latter and then write the mother of all complaints letters to them (with invoices for what it has cost me to put their work right) and claim it from them amicably or failing that, through the county courts.

My first though was that the simplest solution other than hacking the calipers up was to source a wheel with a larger internal diameter. Fortunately, Mark's 13x6J superlites from his TR7 were lying in the workshop. These went straight on and had around 5mm to spare. So it looks like the 6J modification is going to be happening sooner rather than later. I've now got to pay for my tyres to be switched from the 5.5j to the 6j's, buy them from Mark (he's done one race on them) and sell my original wheels. What a saga!

Now waiting on shims for the cam. The bottom end of the engine is complate, its just the cylinder head we are waiting on. Once that's done the last load of putting together can take place.

To answer Graeme's question about the ball joints, they aren't standard items. Apparently they have a nylon (nyloc?) bush which is more suitable for competition use. Don't know if that makes sense.

Anyway, latest costs.

MST direct powered transponder (You need one of these for racing now, effectively a lap timer in your car for the organisers) £199.75

Rebuild all front suspension
Fit Steering Rack
Fit new Brake Shoes
Fit rear wheel cylinders
the caliper and fluid return pipe was fouling the inside of the wheels!

Same problem I had after Lo Spec done my Brake kit 4 my Nissan Cherry (1700 quad cam injected),
They where not interested in solving the problem for me,
They had wheel's hubs well everything,
And they still got it wrong,
Ended up grinding small amount's from the caliper till it cleared,
Thanks Mick. I've done the rounds with County Courts and the High Court for clients as I'm a Private Investigator and some of my work involves debt recovery BUT if I have to go down that road then any advice will be appreciated especially if its from someone who knows what they are talking about.

Phil.

So glad you didn't say 'I told you so' even though you did tell me so! The trouble is I think that they will prove to be good brakes. They will have no choice but to take notice of my complaint when it comes. I don't think he put it properly onto CAD otherwise this wouldn't have happened. It would also explain why he verbally told me two different disc sizes were possible and then when I got them they were still 5mm smaller than the figure he had last mentioned to me! Surely the computer would give the largest possible size and that would be it?

Anyway, my strife may save others from the same hassle. I don't think Mark will be putting any business there way and my views are quite clear.
I'm not going to say anything like that at all,
And I must admit there will be better than standard Dolly brake's what wouldn't?.

But the spiel he's going to give you will be on the same line's he gave to me,

I had no choice in hacking the caliper's as I had no choice,
Car was off road 17 week's and was sooo #issed offfffffff.
