One of my colleagues has just been on an 'Ageism' course in preparation for the change to Employment Law due to be implemented in October this year.

Once it has been made 'law', employers will no longer be allowed to use such words as 'bright' 'mature', 'experienced', 'lively' or 'enthusiastic' when recruiting staff. I kid you not!

The names of applicants, age, gender etc. will also need to be removed from application forms prior to them being shortlisted so that there isn't any discrimination.

They are also going to be keeping figures on the ages of persons employed; I guess to see what percentage are 'mature' persons. Is this going to lead to the government dictating to companies that they must employ a certain percentage of women/men/ethnic minorities/school leavers/people near retiring age/transgendered people etc? Surely jobs should be given to the most suitable applicants regardless of any of the above? IMHO there are many jobs where maturity and experience would be a distinct advantage.

Time to emigrate me thinks...................
