Feeling a bit smug...

Just took the track Sprint out for a test drive after fitting my Compomotive wheels, new Cobra seats & 3 point harness. Was a bit weird at first being strapped in tight with no inertia reel giving you freedom of movement (funny how we get used to these things). I think I need to adjust the seats somehow as I'm driving in an upright position (doesn't feel right at all). The wheels were OK, nothing touching, in fact I could fit some bigger discs in those wheels...but I won't.

Anyway, coming back home, round a roundabout I came up behind a Corrado VR6 just as we got on to a nice straight stretch of dual carriageway the car in front of him pulled over & off we went. How quick are these cars? I stayed with him all the way to the next roundabout. I wasn't catching him but he wasn't loosing me either. I'm sure he would be quicker through the twisty bits though.

VR6

Mart, had a similar experience at Le Mans a couple of years ago. One of our crowd turned up in one of these Corrado VR6's. When we went for a bit of a blast one afternoon, the chap remarked afterwards that up to about 70mph all he could do was keep up. This was on a completely standard Sprint too ! A mate who turned up last year in a late 70's 911 3.0 Carrera said the same thing (although the current engine is much better than last time). Nice to know the old girl can still raise a few eyebrows isn't it

is about 180 bhp IIRC but being golf mk2 based is not particularly light.

About high 7's, low 8's to 60 and 130 ish top end with a favourable wind.

You done well then...
oh well, not so smug then if it had trouble keeping up with your standard Sprint (er, that sounds snobby, not meant to). Mine peaks at 170bhp at the flywheel so maybe I should have passed him, I suppose his could have been modded. I always thought these cars were pretty quick & expected him to leave me in his dust.
Trouble is Mart, you wouldn't know what he has had done under the bonnet. Most rarely are standard at this stage in their lifes. Check out some VR6 forums and see if you have been mentioned!

My seats are set with the front mounts about 10-20mm higher than the rears or otherwise you do have that 'tipping into the steering wheel' feeling.

I was thinking earlier about raising the front of the seats by a similar amount Scott. These seats seem to be higher as there is only about an inch or so between my head & the roof lining, so by the time I put my helmet on...better test that out before Monday.

seems I under-rated it a bit then. Looking at the autocar numbers it should be a LOT quicker than a standard sprint and is in R21 turbo territory and not far off standard cossie...

My earlier comments were from my own road memories of one that didnt fell that quick as a passenger.

In other words you would expect to get smaller in his rear view mirror....

SO you did very well...
Look at the power/weight ratio, a VR6 has about 160bhp/tonne. Your car is a bit lighter than a stock sprint, say 1000kilos, so you've got a similar and possibly higher power/weight ratio.

Add the fact you are running small wheels with a 4.1 cwp and you should be able to just beat it until Aerodynamics really take effect at 3 figure speeds and a VR6 will kick your arse.

I reckon your car should be capable of doing the 0-60 sprint in the high sixes.

Also how sure are you that he was caning it? He could have short shifted, and maybe he had some ridiculous chav 18" wheels and 4 tonnes of amps to slow him down.

There are roo many factors to say one car is quicker than another when driving on road, the biggest is the person sat behind the wheel (says the person who used to wipe the floor with anything in my wake in a 700cc plastic shoe).

Road 'races' might be fun but ultimately prove sod all.

musings

Well, just noticed this thread, thought I might give my input.

I own a standard Sprint and a standard Golf VR6. My Sprint is nowhere near as fast as the VR6, I reckon the guy can't have been trying very hard at all. On the Club GTi forums it is quite normal for guys to have their unmodified 120k+ engines dynoing at over 200 brake, the engines seem to get better as they get older, whereas I would be happy to get a figure over 100 in my Sprint.

Without knowing your exact modifications and his, it's a bit silly to guage on a road race...as Smifter says, most of it is to do with the guy behind the wheel. You need to get it to a drag way and do 1/4 miles in yours, then in the other car to have a reasonable guess at which is faster.

Making this post has just made me realize how lucky I am: two different cars, completely different driving experiences, but both of them bloody good fun. Plus the fact that I managed to get one step closer to having the Dolly back on the road...
Personally, If I'm in any car and I'm pulling away and notice that someone is up for a play that should by rights get blown away, I'll put my foot to the floor just to prove it. I know its childish but I'm sure its male genetics or something!

I reckon the VR6 had his foot all the way down. Mart's car is not standard and is quick.

It was a straight bit of road wasn't it? How much skill can be involved?

He was most definately going for it. We were doing around 40 & I was in 3rd (I had a feeling he was going to stick his foot down...he did). I took mine up to 6000rpm before going into 3rd o/d in then I had my foot to the floor until we both braked hard for the next roundabout. It was a bit of fun, maybe the guys car needed a tune up, I don't know, could be that mine is quite quick now with the 4.1:1 diff.

Heh, just reread what I posted last night, was a little tired and realise my english was pretty poor.

I'll try again; If I had a Dolly that could keep up with a VR6 I would be a very happy man. Especially if the guy was going for it. I guess what I was trying to say is that a standard sprint is no match for a standard VR6.

Yours isn't standard of course .

It has to be said, I'm just as bad in my Sprint V8... Either nobody else is trying or my car's fast!

Chav'd up Saxos etc are easy targets...

Even managed to get a chap to tip his baseball cap in respect in his dressed-up Saxo, as I gave him the effects of 110db of exhaust rumble as I went past... He put up a good fight though... what's a VTS's top speed......?
It's the big beemers that are FAR more satisfying... Let them sit on your ar*e at a slow speed on the motorway, let it get clear in front of you... drop it to 3rd and see ya! Too much fun!
