Spotted on the way to work this morning.<br>

Nice old chap owns it. He used to work for a Standard Triumph garage. <br>
<br>
The car only has 2 previous owners. I think he said it was a '63?<br>
<br>
He suffers with double-vision and had some other problems with his eye which is why he hasn't been driving it.<br>
<br>
He had a query about the numberplate (it ends in PK). Mr Reader, you are usually good with registrations; can you shed any light on it?<br>
<br>
Car was in very good condition and the interior was to die for!<br>

That is a stunner, have you bought it yet and if not why not?<br>

Ok registration wise I think it is pre 1962 therefore not having an "A" suffix at the end of the plate.<br>
I did think though pre 62 plates had three numbers followed by three letters.<br>
Could it be an age related plate of some form?<br>
I am very open to correction on this. <br>

had a jag 6244 uk that was mk11 1960/61 3.8 of course<br>
some 63 didn't have a suffix no had a 63 mini 118 duh

The reg scheme varied on date by area. Not everyone had adopted the suffeix year letter, which started with A in 1963 and wasnt totally adopted until C in 1965.<br>
Thus Hampshire cars would have started AAA 100C on Jan 1 1965, wheras a lot of london cars had A regs...<br>
<br>
The old scheme was a three letter prefix and 3 numbers...eg 390 SNU. The last 2 letters gave some idea of where the car came from and the first letter was in sequence A-Z missing I, Z and Q.<br>
<br>
After they ran out of these they changed to 4 numbers and the location letters from 59 to 64 depending on area.<br>
Then reversed the numbers and letters, eg...356 ATR, before adopting the suffix scheme.<br>
<br>
This is I think a Guildford reg from about 63/4<br>

IMO selling numbers wipes the history of a car. The sad fact is, that current rules mean only MOT'd cars can have transferred so this means only good cars are having this done. Wouldn't matter so much if it was just scrappers.<br>
Ever been to a show and counted the number of Scottish numbers there? All re-registered and impossible to trace the history easily. <br>

The Vitesse came out in 62 so it's a pretty early car. Very nice

Its a genuine plate if its a 63 car. My tina (cor!) was a D plate registered in June 66.....<br>

I'm with you on transfering plates, bad practice as cars loose history. I bought the tina to prevent this happening.<br>
I'm with Jonners on the letters meaning where it was registered. <br>
CA was Chester, MA manchester and AF was Cornwall/ Anglesey (Normally RAF! why would I know this!!!) as I remember.....

suffixes used to be listed in ancient copies of the AA book. They arent infallible though as a few did move round a bit through lack of use.<br>
My old magnette is a DA, from Maidstone but I think DA changed to the Reading area.<br>

Most of the early O's were Brum....and a lot of Y's where London.<br>

a Vitesse 6 then...1600cc small bore version of the vanguard six engine with a solex carb IIRC. The T2000 was yet to be released...so a real oldie.<br>
Single speedo only too...<br>

Mate at Uni had one and it was old even then....<br>
but not as old as my Z maggie...<br>
<br>
Buy it of you get the chance...it wont be that nice to live with (prehistoric ride, rubbish heater, dodgy handling) but bags of character<br>

You will find alot of the age related 'old style' plates aren't being lifted from good condition cars. Some people buy complete scrappers with the plate and have a moody MOT completed, transfer the plate and then the shell gets scrapped. I think the DVLA are getting wise to this and want to see the car ebfore the transfer now, particularly if it hasn't been taxed for donkeys...<br>
