I'm going to buy - BUT I need your help - please!
Dear kind folks (creep, creep)!

Further to my post and your overwhelming responses - I've spent the last two days looking around - AND....

I really need your help. Should I buy this dolly sprint?

"N" Reg 1976, 60,000 miles, 2 owners, Nr Birmingham, dry dock for 13 years.

The pictures of the car will be on my website in about 30 mins (21:30 tonight) http://www.chesney.org then click on "dog1" just by the spider!

I would REALLY appreciate your help.

What questions would you ask before buying?

How much do you think it is worth (£500?)

Regards

ANDREW

P.S. Sorry about the last posting - should have been a new topic!

Re: I thinks I has clicked too early
Seriously

Its obviously going to need a fair bit of work.
Does it run? If so was it a smoky bag of nails? Did you check the chassis Legs for corrosion and give them a good poke? same for the sills, boot floor and the bottom of the windcreen pillars behind the doors.

The rear arches are going to need some work by the looks of things and the front lower panel (a fave corrosion spot) is suspiciously covered in underseal.

door Bottoms look a little suspect.

Is that overspray on the front grilles??

Interior looks good though.

Overall I'd say its probably got potential to be good or a nightmare.

Looks like its got a coolant leak but that might just be from the thermostat housing.

Be cheeky and offer £250 and at the least you'll get that for the parts value!!
Swap family for Dolly!!!
Dear Folks

Your help is very much appreciated...

I have not seen this car in person. The pics have been sent by the seller. No MOT garaged for 13 years.

I know this is really cheeky, but if anyone would like (at a cost) to check this vehicle out for me it would be appreciated.

The guy (Marc Grasby) lives South of Birmingham J3 of M42.

Kindest regards and sincere wishes
ANDREW
P.S. I can do a good swap - say 3 kids for a Dolly!!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

1976?
Are we certain about the year of manufacture?

I've only had experience with 75 and 76 models and both of them had vinyl gearstick gaiters (and overdrive..) and isn't the side mirror placement in the style of pre-75?

(Well, mine are stuck on the door anyway...)

Just a thought - feel free to educate me...
Re: 1976?
I've been meaning to go look at this car for a while (well its not far away so rude not to!) but other diversions have crept into the equation. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
This is the one that was advertised at £800 on a '74 N plate isn't it?

You are welcome to come look at my fleet for comparisson........Stourbridge, 10 miles the other side of J3.

I could be persuaded to look at it for you now that I have asuaged my thirst for another car I should be safe enough........

Re: 1976?
OK, had a closer look at the photo's.

Its non overdrive which is not so much of a problem; I have at least 4 o/d boxes around spare.

Can you weld? Not wishing to talk the value of cars down this will go to holes in several places at least with a bit of light finger tapping: the headlamps have sunk back into the front panel, the wing surround here on one side at least looks suspect, the rear door has rotted through from the inside, no doubt the frame has suffered as well as the skin, the boot floor looks flaky in all the right places, there is a mark on the n/s/f wing just about the mudshield position and the rear arches need work both inner and outer. Damp has damaged the door cards - I can already tell how it smells on the inside and it appears to be several shades of white.

At first glance I wouldn't pay £500 for this car and the previous suggestion of £250 may prove to be too high also, but it will have some benefits of being stored if it has been done correctly; it does look clean in some places.......

Have a look?
Dear Alun

I welcome you views, I will open the offer at £250.

I have not picked up a welder since doing O'Level metalwork (some 24 years ago).

Mechanics, not too bad or should I say I was not too bad some 18 years ago - since that time I've had company cars and have rarely looked under a bonnet.

If you would like to have a look at this Dolly and give me your unbiased, frank, open and honest views - I would be more then willing to pay for such expert advice!

Just let me know

Kindest regards

ANDREW

I would say....
let Alun have a good look. I reckon its about 150 quid.
I would go with it if the front panel, screen bases, chasis rails and floor pans are sound. Everything else is relatvely easy to fix. Budget on about 400 quid for welding on cills and boot floor and source some good s/h doors and you could have a nice car for under a grand.
Calling Alun -your mission should you choose to accept...
Dear Alun

It appears that you are very well respected by quite a few members <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /alien.gif ALT="0]"> and knowledgeable when it comes to Dolomite Sprints<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o"> .

Therefore, I wonder if you could help me out. Could you give a Dolly Sprint the "once-over" to see if in your opinion it is a good buy. If you could let me know how much ££ you would want to do this, I can budget for this.

The vital stats are as follows:

Date of registration 20/5/75.
The last change of keeper was 31/1/76
The chassis number isva7138dl
Done 60,000 miles
Situated J3 off M43.

Apparently, the car was started for the first time after being parked up about a month ago and all Marc Grasby (Seller) did was clean the contacts the clutch was stuck but he freed that off.
It's great to see TDC members helping other Dolly enthusiasts out even though they may not be members. This is how I imagined the TDC would be. That is why I rejoined the other week.
