dolomite 1300 (1978)

I have just bought my first dolomite, a 1300 with white paintwork. i haven't viewed it but if i have to go on what the buyer says its in good all round condition. it has been stored for 4yrs and has a number of parts replaced. its due its mot on thursday. i'm expecting it to pass but it needs a bit of welding on the sills.<br>

i as just wondering what kind of value this would have? would putting through its mot, getting the work done and taxing it increase its value. whats an average price for this type of car?<br>

I bought mine in about the same condition as yours (welding on sills and various other new parts) with 12 months MOT for £320. Mine is a bit rusty round one of the front headlights but otherwise sound. It's also brown which is not a very popular colour. I wouldn't want to pay any more than that, but the reason I bought it was because it was a simple cheap car with low rate tax and low insurance, not beacause I particularly wanted a Dolly. Although I would definitely have another one now.<br>

No Dolomite 1300 is worth more than 500 quid unless its VERY special. <br>
Old 1850's are even easier on the pocket cos they are cheaper to insure at over 30 years old and free tax.<br>
1300's are noisy on the motorway but fine round town.<br>
I never buy a car unseen. I might take an unseen car for free.<br>
No MoT failure needing welding is worth more than 100 quid.<br>
There is a vermillion 1300 MoT failure round here thats a non seller at 60 quid for 4 months....even with a good history.<br>

If it needs welding on the cills then it won't pass!<br>

I'd agree with Jonner's brief recount there on prices. A car's value may not necessarily increase with an MOT as opposed to without, but you may find it will sell easier with one.<br>

If it has been stored for four years then it may well fail on other items than just the cills.<br>

it had a lot of bits replaced before it was dry stored and the only obvious thing was the welding on the sills. (i realise it won't pass the mot!). its had new tyres all round, radiator, some steering stuff and headlamps. it hasn't been mot'd for 4 years so technically it hasn't failed yet! i had to book it in for a mot so that i could drive it down from hull legally. i'm 21 so a transit and trailer was out of the question and other transportation was double the cost of the car.i'm thinking that getting an mot will give me a chance to find out what it needs done.<br>

i just took a fancy to it, because 1: i'm pretty skint at the moment and need to sell my rover but still need a car (student life is hitting me hard) and two: it seemed pretty cool. a mate had one last year (a nice orange thing) and i loved it and 3: needing something to cheer me up. its mainly for nipping to uni and back five days a week, the odd 30 mile trip to the airport and the occassional 300 mile trip home (yikes!). thought it'd do the job till i get working at the summer again. if i doesn't do then i can always sell it on. a car with a 12month mot is surely liable to sell better than one without? my insurance went up by £1 (!) which will see me out till renewal in august.<br>

jon: what would you class as a very special 1300? i guess one in perfect condition, 1 owner, original parts, etc?<br>
and you mentioned it was nosiy on the m-ways. can i fill door/panel cavities up or something?<br>

A one owner car with sub 50k miles may make 750.<br>
Anything with a decent shell is otherwise best upgraded<br>
with twin carbs, overdrive and a higher diff. 4.11 is too thrashy for a 70 -80 M-way cruise. Overdrive box is the easiest cure. You need prop shaft and mountng and wiring. <br>
I may have a breaker soon with all the bits but I'm in West London.<br>

electrically operated higher gear that works off a switch on the gearstick. It means cruising at lower rpm.<br>

okay, just arrived back from hull.<br>

car is excellant condition, and only damage to interior is a rip on the drivers seat and some dodge carpetting around the gearstick. 85,000 miles. a couple of rusty bits but nothing major. engine started first time and was sweet. as mentioned its been standing for 4 years, but drove well all the way home (130 miles). average speed 50 (40 uphill, 60 down!), and had it at 70 with no problems at all. brakes aren't great, exhaust has a hole and needs either new sill or work on it. drove via some speed bumps on the way home and there was no creaking/bumping, etc. think i've got a nice car here. well, at least i'm v happy with it.<br>

couldn't get it mot'd today so doing 2morrow morning. my bet is that it will fail on brakes, exhaust and sill only. <br>

where can i get a new/2nd hand exhaust? probably need only mid and end section though a full system would probably be best.

I think (without trying to locate my last issue of Dolly Mixture) that the club can supply either part or full mild steel systems. Someone correct me (please) if I'm wrong.

Where abouts in the country are you. I dont think I have a rear section, but am sure i have a middle bit. I have to go to nottingham on saturday - from salisbury.. so if you were on -route i could drop it off to you??<br>

it failed the MOT, and the labour is whats stopping me from getting it sorted (i didn't bring my gear with me when i moved to uni!).<br>

unless there is any interest from here by monday, then i will stick it up on ebay. (please note i've spent £200 buying, moving and MOT'ing it and am a student. some sympathy please!).<br>

excess corrosion to n/s front chassis rail in 2 places<br>
brakes need attention<br>

echaust also needs attention though the mechanic reckoned a bit of welding could fix it.<br>
