Hello all,<br>
I need some advice. I think it was algik who said it a while ago on this board about a coupling that could be bought from rally design ,that then does away with the dodgy rubber doughnut/replace every mot part that is there at the moment.Does anybody have the code number for this part? Is it from a mk1/2 escort?

I purchased one but I have not yet had to fit it.<br>

The part number is RD820 and in July 2003 it cost £20.92 including P & P.<br>

I've fitted one a while back - You'll need to shorten the steering shaft that fits into it by approx 5mm as the solid coupling is slightly longer.<br>

Well worth it though - less vague in the straight ahead position.

The mechanic who looks after my car says that the steering wheel can be pulled up by about an inch and he thinks that it "floats". There is also a muted graunching noise from the column, would this coupling sort things out?

81Dolly, your lower column bush has disintegrated. I have just had to replace my steering column for the exact same thing. Finding a good second-hand column is probably easier than obtaining the bush and fitting it.<br>

but if you are talking about the bush where the column goes thru the body...this is just a simple push fit and doesnt need the column removing. Just disconnect the intermediate shaft, loosend column adjuster...push column end in to car, remove whats left of old bush, fit new, reinstert column lower end and refit intermedaiet shaft. Half hour job...No need for a new column at all.<br>
Fitchetts have the bush and so does Chris Wittor.<br>

Jon, the lower bush inside the column itself will be the cause of the graunching noise. I tried replacing all manner of things, including the bulkhead bush (as you say, a simple fit) but the problem turned out to be the bush that keeps the inner (rotating) section of the column located in the fixed column tube. Eventually mine wore so badly that a part of it ate its way through the rubber boot at the lower end of the column. and I caught my ankle on it. Much pain and blood.<br>

Yes in that case a replacement column is a good idea.<br>
