Sprint alloy wheels - what primer ?

#1 Post by simonhorton » Wed Nov 23, 2005 6:00 pm

Hi,
I have had my sprint alloys shot blasted.
What is the best primer to use on the back and around were the tyre fits.
thanks Simon

any aluminium etch primer. The yellow gear for window frames from B&Q is not bad

check the wheels closely for pitting before you bother with primer, otherwise you could be spending 3 coats worth just flatting them to get the 'right' finish.

use P400 to lightly flat/clean them up, then if you used 'autosol' or similar, you simply wont get a better finish.

it also depends again on what was actually used to blast them.

etch primer has to be the base coat, then pre-coat / primer / undercoat, then colour, then lacquer.

etch primer followed by hammerite for the black bits.

polishing and waxing gives a better finish on the 'silver' parts, but requires more maintenance

also, before I get slammed into the ground, dont use autosol to polish them if you plan to paint them.
