Dwell Angle

I have borrowed a dwell meter from a chap across the road, so I just gave it a go. My Autobook for the 1850 says the dwell angle is 40 degrees +/-1 degree. The best I can get is about 25 degrees any more and the points don't open any more. I put on new points, condenser, leads and started off setting the points with feelers. Anyone know if 40 degrees is correct for an 1850 or have I got a dogdgy set or something else?

Dunno what the dwell is all about to be honest. Something to do with the number of degrees of rotation of the crank or maybe the rotor arm that the points are open or shut?
Any dwellberts out there know any better?

the dwell angle is 39 deg +/- 1 deg and unless you have a meter you cannot check it just adjust your points correctly and your dwell will be o.k
I think I'll take DollyBoy's advice and not dwell on it.

IIRC to increase the dwell you close the points. Its one of those things that I have to refresh myself on. But as points wear, the gap closes, the dwell increases and the ignition timing retards.

Maybe the heel on my "new" points is too short. To get a big enough gap to give me 39 degrees of dwell I close the gap so far but then the dizzy cam misses the heel and doesn't open the points at all.
Or maybe I am just being fooled (not the first or last time ) by a crappy old Gunsons dwell meter. Anyway I have set the points using feelers and timed the engine with a strobe and it seems good enough for now - at least it starts on the first attempt.

The dwell angle is the time the points stay closed, which is the amount of time the coil has to re-energize between ignition firings. Too shorter dwell time (angle) and the coil may not re energise sufficiently.

On an 1850 with delco dizzie the points can be adjusted both ends cos both securing screws have a slottted hole so you shoukd be able to get it close enough to still opne on the cam withy a 15 thou gap.
