I have a couple of probs with my 1850 hl auto, the first is that when I put the car in gear there is a big clunk as it takes up drive, usualy I would put this down to play in the diff but something someone has said to has made me question this, could the line pressure be too high? this would make some sense as when I got under the car and moved the prop there was only a very slight movement and not enough to cause the level of clonk I get also when cold the clonk is not apparent but this I put down to the torque converter draining down over night.<br>
Second problem is that when pulling away (at any speed)<br>
there is a juddering from the back end can anyone confirm that this would be the bushes on the back end.<br>
Lastly, when pulling away with the steering on a hard right hand lock I get a rather strange graunchy kind of noise accompanied with a knocking that appears to be coming from the front of the car, all the wheel bearings appear to be ok and the exhaust seems well fixed and in good nick, if anyone can shed any light on my troubles I will be eternally grateful.<br>

My 1850's gearbox has a similar 'characteristic', a large clonk on takeup, but only if I'm above 1000~ odd RPM. Lower than that it's a pronounced cushioned 'thud', as mentioned in the owners handbook (it's normal apparently).<br>

My idle, when warm is 650-800RPM if that helps.<br>

When I was running the tickover high on the 1500 to compensate for dodgy tappets, there was a clonk when taking up drive.<br>

Was the ehxaust hitting the body cause the engine mounts are worn.<br>
<br>
Could it be anything like that on the 1850 maybe?

I think i`ll try winding the idle down a bit it`s set at just over 1000 rpm when hot at the moment.<br>
I am going to be changing the engine and gearbox mounts soon as I bought a full set when Rimmers had the sale on just before xmas along with a load of othher stuff none of which has manged to find it`s way on to the car yet.

Idle speed over 1000 hot and "I can feel play in the propshaft but it isnt enough"???????<br>

Idle speed should be 850 rpm tops on an auto or you will creep at nearly 10 mph! ANY play in the prop means change the u/js NOW!!!<br>

Then the clonks will all go....<br>

I'm happy to sort the prop shaft for you BTW...I may even have a spare auto one as I got all the leftovers after converting a Dolly auto to a Sprint last year...<br>
u/j's are no problem byt the centre bearing can be pricey.<br>
Steering graunch could be a badly centred rack letting a wheel foul the tie rod. Have a look for tell tale signs of a polished tie rid and a scuffed inner tyre edge.<br>

I concur with Jonners - my '76 1850 auto has no play in the prop and if the idling speed is anywhere near 1000 you will receive a "clonk" on take up! (probably also a bent front end if too close to the car in front as well!) <br>

This cold weather won't help if your carbs are not properly set up, either, as idling will be a pig in the cold if you're not careful - hence the understandable desire to tweek the revs up. <br>

You must always, always, also pay attention to the autobox oil levels and check them as per the instructions - it's not sufficient to take the dipstick out for a quick peek every now and then. I took the car down to a mates garage at lunch and I richened the mixture up a bit and then wound the idle down to a shade under 850 rpm, result!!! smoother idle and more of cushioned thud as opposed to a heavy clonk.<br>
Still got the juddering from the back end though, ah well at least the cars running mor happily now.
