UJ, Prop Shaft or Square Wheel?

Dear Folks

Just got back from visiting a great show and auto-jumble in Andover - only ONE Sprint there!!!

Anyway, whilst driving there and considerably worse now I get a noise when pulling away from 0 - 10 Mph. It sounds like I have a square wheel!

It appears to originate from axle but shakes the whole car - until one gets above about 10 Mph. Tried pulling away in second gear and the same thing happens.

Any ideas? My guess is Universal Joints or Prop Shaft - I was wondering if I am along the right lines and if so how do I check?

Any ideas/ help would be appreciated.
sounds more like prop centre mtg
but you can check the u/j by holding the two seprate yolks and moving them to see if there's any play they can lock up if they are realy bad you can also remove the
flanges from the diff/ g/box and check for free play and also if they feel smooth when turning side to side
just as easy to take prop off altogether u/j's tend to give imbalance prob's when going at higher speed than what your problems at

Andrew,

read the "I'm confused now" thread further below. I was having vibration and 'clunking' noises from underneath which was worse at higher speed i.e higher gears.

I've just replaced my prop UJ's as the rear was knackered.........it's cured the problem.

Spare Prop Shaft?

As some of you know I have an old "Rusty" Dolly for spares. Can the Propshafts be taken off one and put on another?

I read in the Haynes manual that they are balanced and one should make a note of the location on the propshaft and flange. This being so, would it be OK to transfer the propshaft from "Rusty" to my Dolly?

Any views would be appreciated.
Think you are along the right lines suspecting the prop. I had a rear UJ sieze once, couldn't see out of the rear view mirror, mate of mine shoeved in on the four poster a replaced the rear UJ in situ <img src=
http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> i'd never seen the job done it situ before.

You can swop props, they are balanced as a unit, i've wsopped props, axles, boxes from a variety of cars over the years, sure the manual says 'mark and replace in same position' but if someone else has taken them off and not marke them you have no choice. I've never had a problem, I say go ahed and swop the prop.

As said earlier, centre mounting can also cause 'knocking of the floor'

I had this same problem with my 1850 auto, terrible vibration from what I thought was the frint of the car when pulling away, took the prop off over the weekend and found that the rear UJ had seized and the centre pearing had parted company with it`s rubber £45 later and all is well.

Spare Shaft!

Dear All

Just to let you know, the UJ (gearbox end) was completely shot. It had sooo much movement that it had almost completely rubbed away one of the nyloc-nuts!!!

Put the shaft on from the Yellow-scrappy and works great! Feels like a new car. My car used to "shake" at anything over 75mph - went to 90+ without any shake (of course not tested on public highway!!)

The rubber "disc-bit" was worse for wear - but - it works!! Do I need to worry about this

Is it worth me replacing the UJ and can one easily replace the middle "disc-bit"??

Finally, whilst under two dollies I noticed that my car (the good one) had a tie bar between the two suspension arms whereas the on -scrappy did not - why would this be and does it make much difference?

I know there are a load of questions in this posting - any answers would help me in my thirst for dolly-knowledge!
Prop etc...

The Sprint prop has a hooke type centre joint that cant be dissassembeld without specialist equipment, so its impossible to change the center bearing at home. Prop shaft services at Feltham....
The Sprint (or 1850) should have a rear anti roll bar. If it doesnt then its not there for any number of reasons....from its not a real Sprint to its been nicked.
You need a good center bearing really....some slight surface perishing is prolly ok but if you have any splits then replace it.
rear anti-roll bar

Sounds like you have a rear anti-roll bar fitted! I'm still not sure how much of a difference it actually makes to the car and its handling, but since it was fitted (as well as replacing the rear suspension bushes) the car is a LOT stiffer at the back and and holds the road MUCH better. So... try it with and without to make up your own mind. Should only be four bolts to remove it... but I'm sticking with mine!!
