Removing Overdrive Gear Knob

Although I thought a simple task I have learn't that nothing is simple when it comes to my car. The gear knob has been tightened by a large green made in a bad mood or so it would seem.

The knob is held in place by a nut with 2 recesses at 180 degrees and is very tight. I looks as if someone has had a go with a nail punch in the past.

Is there a proper tool for the removal of this or has someone got a good idea on how to remove it without using a hacksaw?

Thanks in advance
