1300 FWD Clutching at straws......?

Play on words.

Ok, lost the clutch totally on the FWD today, most entertaining driving six miles home!

Pulls the car to pieces to replace the slave cylinder (Done) however the thrust release bearing is flapping in the wind around the input shaft.

I suspect I will need to remove the gearbox input shaft to deal with this?
Any ideas anyone?

To remove said shaft the manual states I need a special tool, anyone have one?

Scott, be wary about using the same garage again I suspect the spotty youff that works there has no mechanical sympathy or apptitude with old cars. Please don't read this as me having a go about the car, it's fantasic!

no you can do it whithout the tools (all it is anyway is a bolt and slidink hammer )
just put a bolt into the internal thread (you'll see a thrust one in the shaft remove it )mole grips and tap the grips if its that tight otherwise it'll pull out with ease

I got mine out by welding a washer on the end of bolt, wound it in to the back of the input shaft, a few quick tugs with the slide hammer and it was out.

Sorted! Took the opportunity to lubricate the rear input shaft bearing whilst at it.

So we now have a nice quiet gearbox, clutch that works and the speedo working too.
Should have been in bed...... Nights!

Just read this Al. I know you aren't having a go as you are too polite for that! I'm glad you have got it sorted and I am annoyed that the guy I paid to repair it obviously didn't!

In all honesty, I would have liked to drive it around for a few weeks so that any niggles could have been sorted out by him one way or the other. At least you have it sorted now and I hope the whole experience will be bit more enjoyable!

(Sorry Sophie!!, its a good car honest!)
I've got some of the input shaft grease if you need some. Oil seal ok now?

Problem is Scott, I'm just too impatient!

I used some aeroshell hi temp aircraft grease for the input shaft and bearing. All seams quieter and if it's good enough for historic aircraft.....!

The car was working fine last night however I have done around 30 miles today and it's playing up again!

Difficult to select gears, clutch judder and moving whilst clutch peddle depressed.

I checked the reservoir and there was no loss of fluid this time, so the new slave cylinder works. Should I try bleeding the slave again?

So it's not just my Dolly that gets treated to Aircraft grade greases, adhesives and lubricants then.....

I'd be shocked at you using anything else Al.

All I can say Al is that before the box change the clutch operation was faultless. I'm no expert on anything least of all clutches. Hope somebody else can offer advice on why its creeping.
try bleeding it again if it doesnt work then take a look at the master cyl assuming you replaced the slave seals
if it's creeping it's a loss of pressure could be air or bad seals

Will take a poke at the master cylinder next. Common sense told me to replace the whole lot...... But you know the story!

OM15 for the brake system?! If only the seals would take it!

If she is creeping with the clutch fuuly depressed you are not disengaging the clutch fully - no two ways about it.

Thus the problem must be:

1. Pedal mount and pivot arm or
2. Slave cyl or
3. Master cyl or
4. Release bearing

Since 1 is easy to check, and you have attended to 2 and 4, that only leaves 3 to investigate. Did you replace the release bearing or merely re-seat it? Was it knackered?

I find it best to start the pedal end of things and work towards the engine. A methodical approach will find the culprit in the end. Good luck!

I reseated the bearing.... I'll recheck the pivot arm bolts.

As the clutch was working fine until the slave cylinder let go, I didn't bother with the master cylinder.....

Still haven't got around to re-bleading the system. probably at the weekend, if not in Scotland with work......

Once the clutch is sorted it will be for sale (Sorry for advertising!)
As the wife prefer's the Manta...... No accounting for taste!!!
If anyone is interested PM me.
