Voltmeter

I've just replaced the alternator in the Sprint and am getting some strange readings on the voltmeter. When i first started the car it read 13.5 volts. Took it for a run and went down to 11.5 volts for 15 mins then went up to 13.5 volts for 5 mins. All the way home it read 11.5 volts except for a few mins when it went up to 13.5 volts ! What is it trying to tell me ... i always thought it should hover at about 12 volts ?<br>
