I have just bought a Kenwood head unit and CD multichanger for my Dolly and was just wondering what speaker arrangement some of you guy`s have. I have a set of Infinity 6x9 that I was planning on putting on the rear parcel shelf but it will mean cutting in to the metal work and I really can`t be bothered with that. If my memory serves the are holes already in the parcel shelf but what size speaker fits in the hole????? also front speakers. I don`t want to go destroying perfectly good door cards for the sake of speakers and I can`t seem to find any speakers that are built in to there own enclosures that would sit on the front parcel shelf.
As always any suggestions are greatfully received.
PS I`m not a chav I just like to be able to hear my music and not have to listen to muted farty noise that comes from the MW radio and single speaker!!!!

Im not a Chav either but whethere or not the lad who owned the car before me was or not??? your guess is as good as mine!

Mine came with a home made rear parcel shelf covered in black leather/leatherette. It had two 4 inch speakers on the furthest edges and in the inner there were two 6 inch grills. When I took the car apart ready for the roof chopping off I discoverd I had two 10 inch Subs laying behind the 6 ich grills!!! These were attatched under the metal of the parcel shelf, the metal holes under the shelf are tiny and wouldn't hold 6X9s but by the time youve attatched them to a wooden parcel shelf (mines 12mm as opposed to standard 2-5mm!) the magnets should fit in the gap. In the picture you can see one of the wooden mounts for the subs has a same size hole in it as the metal part of the parcel shelf.

When you think the parcel shelf is nearly as wide as the car I think you'll apreciate those speakers are HUGE!

As for the front I have 1 small speaker (same as small ones on rear parcel shelf) where the air vent should be (the one for the whole of the car not the windscreen one). I have two tweeters (about 3cms big!) just double taped to the far left and right of the dash. Got two speakers which look identical to the smaller ones on the rear parcel shelf underneath the tweeters and placed in there own boxes on the front parcel shelf covered in the same leathery stuff, looks very profesional!
And for some reason on the back of the speaker box in the left theres another speaker!

Thats 11 speakers!!! Now I have to take all the wiring out without damaging it for my next dolly <img src=

Hmmm, and maybe change the alternator too, that`s a lot of speakers. I`m just thinking a couple of speakers on the rear shelf and a couple up front.

More moons ago than I care to dwell on I faced the same dilemma, naff sound or chop metal.

In the end I got a very acceptable result with a pair of 8" round 200W jobbies with built in crossover and tweeter. The magnets just about fitted through the slots in the metal of the parcel shelf. I made up wooden do'nuts about an inch and a bit thick to lift them off the parcel shelf. The wood was bolted through the metal on top of the vinyl shelf and the speakers screwed to the wood. T'was very acceptable in a not at all good for my ears kinda way.

I got a parcel shelf to cut from the breakers so I could keep mine mint. The speakers had to go when I was preparing the car for sprinting but thats another story.
As I thought. I am going to sell my 6x9`s to a friend and with the proceeds I am going to buy some 130mm round speakers for the rear shelf, Kenwood do some 180w items and also a small set for the front, all I need to do is figure out where to put them up front now. I like the air vent idea and to be honest all they appear to do is increase wind noise.
Julian, are you still wanting the tow bar, Le Mans is only a fortnight away.

No expert on these matters I'm afraid, but as regular users of the Board are aware, I am going thru the motions of fitting music to my 1300FWD.

Like you, I did not want to cut immacualte door cards to fit speakers, particularly as in my case they are now increasingly rare. I spoke to a pal of mine who is an expert on matters car audio and he had a scout about and came up with a Blaupunkt product which is a self enclosed box and can be mounted on the front parcel shelf, with velcro if you don't want to drill.

He arranged a demo for me last week and I was stunned at the sound quality, which certainly belies their appearance. They retail at £99.00 a pair which isn't cheap, though you may find them cheaper on the web somewhere. The procuct code is IC400, and they can handle up to 120 watts.
let me say just this one thing: DO NOT USE 6x9s! EVER!

<img src=
http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> sorry they just complete defy the laws of physics relating to sound, this is how passionate i am about sound quality... sound waves are effectively a bubble in the air, and bubbles are round, therefore speakers should be round, as they were when they were invented, 6x9s are not round, therefore they are physically inadequate.

oh, and about putting them in the dolly, maybe 2x 6" round speakers in the rear parcel shelf and make two little boxes for housing 5" round speakers and perch them on the front parcel shelf? just a thought...

you could always hack up the door cards...

Never thought of a 6x9 like that but I guess you`re right, anyway I have found the answer, i`m having some Infinity 130mm speakers (£65) on the rear shelf and some pioneer speakers (33) on the front parcel shelf, these ones are actually built in to there own enclosure already so should go in just nicely. So all in I get for speakers just by selling my 6x9`s and hopefully a decent sounding stereo to help drown out the wind noise.
