I'm still not having too much luck with my overdrive wiring. It seems the gremlin has moved down the wires a little. Whenever there is power to the overdrive, the fuse blows every time I push the gearstick through the horizontal part of the 'H' gate. This happens at both ends and in the middle. All of the wiring that is visible from inside the car has been checked and insulated, so I guess it's something a little further underneath. <br>

Looking at the wiring diagram in the haynes, I see that the feed runs to the reverse switch before going to the overdrive. Is there any chance my problem might lay there, and if not, has anybody else encountered a similar problem?

Mines not working at the moment, probably for the same reason. I'm going to look at using the headlight flash on the stork as the overdrive switch and therefore take the wiring away from the gear lever. I would imagine safer to operate as well when driving rapidly.<br>

Replace the fuse with a Bulb Holder connected with crocodile clips,<br>
(So you have no fuse the bulb will act as a fuse)<br>
<br>
When it short's out the bulb will light.<br>
Once you found the short simply remove the bulb and refit the fuse.<br>

Try also disconnecting the reverse light switch <br>

Run the overdrive thru a relay if your using the headlight flasher as the overdrive switch.

How difficult is it to access is the wiring on the gearbox?

To do it properly remove the parcel shelf,<br>
Take out the carpet,<br>
Unbolt the tunnel,<br>

That will give you a clear view/access to the gearbox.

Parcel shelf fell out so I'm already making progress. I'll have a try tomorrow evening, I guess. Do the seats need to come out too?

That's not far...I drove mine back from Aldershot to Weston with no O/D. Just kept it at 70 mph all the way back.<br>

any distance is a bit dodgy, as I also don't have windscreen wipers, or more importantly the radio. I reckon I'll have a try at it myself before I admit defeat.

in the stick...or the switch base is touching the collar nut or something like that.<br>
Does the reverse light work when you puit the fuse back in?<br>
The other possibility is the inhibitor switch is shorting out to earth. Ive had this once on a 3 rail box. You could just disconnect the inhibitor...well short it out as just disconecting it wont tell you everything...and see if the fuse problem persists...the bulb trick is a good idea.<br>

It's not in the gearstick itself, everything in there now has insulating tape wrapped round it. The problem occurs even when the switch is disconnected.<br>

I've not been able to get into reverse without the fuse blowing. I reckon the inhibitor might be a good place to start, though.
