Can someone confirm my fears please, my Sprint engine has developed an oil leak from the front corner of the block, behind the water pump. Has my head gasket seen better days? Or is there something else around there that could be at fault? you'd be amazed how oil can track from other places - could be from breather hoses or it could be the timing cover joint to the block/head.<br>

I dont think theres an oilway there but I'm not certain.

When you say behind the Water Pump, the leak isn't coming form the aperture in the block is it?, Oil seal on W'pump 'gone west'<br>

Just thought I'd check on oil and water levels whilst I was doing a couple of little bits on the car this morning. Only to find the head gasket's knackered!! Loads of mayonnaise like stuff around the filler cap. Wouldn't be too disappointed, except I only replaced the thing over New Year, spending HOUSR cleaning all the sufaces down and checking them. And now it's gone with no warning.<br>

Has anyone else had problems with new gaskets for 1500s (recessed block) going shortly after installation, as well as being checked after a couple of weeks driving and found to be fine?<br>

Aha! Its a recent gasket install.<br>

Have you torqued the head bolts up recently? Mine did a similar thing about 500 miles after fitting a new gasket, torqued it up to 55lbft and it was OK again (after an oil/water change).

Have a look at Barry W's experiences, any similarities?, could be one of the naff gaskets<br>

The irony of it is that I HAD checked it was talked down properly after a couple of weeks' running...and it was still fine. The gasket came from Canley, and I'll have another look at it when I take the head off to fit a new one. There is no evidence of damage to studs, they cleaned up nicely before going back in. The only thing that did REALLY annoy me was the time taken to clean up the head / block faces as the previous gasket must have had a good wadge of sealant on it as it disintegrated and STUCK to both surfaces.<br>

The new one seemed good - after seeing the details I checked it over before fitting.<br>
