Exhausted ! (fitting exhaust systems, stopping leaks)

Twice now i have taken my stainless exhuast apart in the hope of sealing the joints after an engine out job. I have cleaned all the joints and used an assembly paste ( fairly liberally ) around the inner pipe before sliding over the outer. Two have sealed this time but two have not. It's a horrid job at the best of times but i am fast losing patience with this. I did it first on a hot day and the paste seemed to go off slightly as i could not start it for a while. This time on a colder but mild day i started it soon after and it still leaked. Looks like it is mainly around the slot that is clamped together. Not sure of the make but the back box looks standard and i have a stailess downpipe..
Any tips..
