bobbin thing up through the boot floor with a big washer - watch that you don't puncture the tank,

I'll second that. I got one lurking somewhere you are welcome to as mine's fitted as seb says. A medium irish screwdriver easily adjusts the bottom of the tank enough to avoid fouling.

Next time I'm fitting one I'll two of the bobbins with a short bar between because the exhaust is a bit heavy for one and tends to pull the end off.
Below the fuel tank is a rubber grommet, that comes out and an L shaped bar hooks in to it and is then screwed in to the flange on the wing to boot floor. Then the rubber bush is attatched to a welded nut on the L shape bar.
Like Adam says....

The bracket is crap. Take out the tank and put a big supporting washer and bolt through.
Do the job properly. Tank comes out in 10 minutes.
Yep, that's what I've got on my Brooklands Sprint. It works fine but is a bit naff. On my track Sprint however I have a cotton reel type straight through the boot floor as Jonners has described.

You're lucky Adam, the lip where the boot floor meets the that you drill through wasn't wide enough to reach the hole on the bracket on mine. I'll have a rummage later.
Mine neither! I had to drill another hole in the bracket. The quality of the fitting kit was ermmm... crap! I'm sure the nuts and brackets were an assortment of imperial and metric!

I wanted to make my own up but no one would tell me what was in it

Speaking of SS exhausts...

...I have the stainless Rimmers large bore downpipe on my 1977 white Dolly Sprint, OMK 172R. I ordered this item before I had any idea what a grody job it is to install it. My car already has the stainless system, except for that front pipe off the manifold.

Question: Is it worth installing this pipe? It looks like I have to take the entire heater unit out to get at the manifold bolts. Looks like a pig of a job. I'll do it if there is something to be gained. The regular mild pipe is in good shape and does not leak.

Thanks for any advice,
If you want a stress free Summer, leave it for now. ESpecialy if you have a good blow free seal.

It's up there on the 5 worst jobs to do on a Sprint. I recently fitted a brand new manifold from Rimmers (About £40) and had that installed when the engine was out complete with the downpipe. My previous manifold had stripped threads on one of the front pipe mounts and I couldn't get a good seal. Seemed easier to do it that way even though I don't have the blower on mine!
If it aint broke....

dont fix it.

There is nothing wrong with a mild steel down pipe. It doesnt fill with water and wont rust out for donkeys years. The bolts into the manifold to downpipe flange are absolute gits to get undone with the engine in situ.
If you try and undo them you will round them off or break them. Wait until the engine comes out anyway for some other reason and then do that job at the same time. Give it a day for plus gas or whatever its called stateside to work on the threads and then it should all come apart and you can replace the bolts with good quality studs and nuts for a fuss free future.
