1500HL exhaust upgrade

After finally getting the old girl back on the road after four years of lying dormant (the car, not me) the rusty exhaust has started blowing after the first 1,000 miles.

Following groveling underneath, there is a split on the back box where the tailpipe joins the silencer.

As my car has K&Ns, overdrive and a slightly hotter cam, I would rather incorporate a better exhaust system, to improve the engine's breathing, rather than simply replace the back box. Not looking to have a coal scuttle sticking out of Dolly’s rear but a better system would be nice. Having said that, I would love to create a fire breathing monster out of this one!!

Any ideas??!!!
On KAC, I run a 4:1 branch manifold, into an 1/8" bigger than standard pipe, with 2 cherry bomb type silencers in the system. It sounds very nice!
I had the system built in Coventry on the car, which was handy, as the fit is perfect, and it allowed us to move silencers to the best place for packaging, and mounting.
No big tail pipe, but it does cause heads to turn.
If its a 1500 HL, the exhaust manifold/downpipe isn't too bad, so think about having a less restrictive system from there back, the other option woulld be to cut the downpipe where it goes 2 into one, and then run a single system down the RH side of the car, and do away with all those loss inducing cross over the car pipes.
Does this help as food for thought??
Hey Bruce!
Thanks, that does help but sadly I cannot afford specially made systems yet...was hoping for bolt on alternatives.

My own thinkings is that the standard 1500/1850 back 'box is very restrictive as it runs across the axle and comes out the right hand side. Was thinking of an exhaust that simply comes out of the left. Would a Sprint tailpipe do I wonder?

What do you think??

The early 1850 dolomite came straight out of the back on the LH side, the only issue being that the silencer was all behind the mounting. I added a mounting from the bumper iron on mine to stop it breaking.
That could be an option, alternatively, how about a universal Peco type silencer, mounted off the bumper iron, with a cut and shut pipe to the over axle pipe. Again I had this on the early 1850, and it both looked, and sounded quite nice.
Alternatively, get rid of the silencer, cut and shut the middle pipe, and run a pipe out under the passenger side rear door, touring car Sprint style!
Or, just found something that might interest you...
Select Triumph 1500 RWD as the car instead of dolomite. The back pipe there looks worth a punt at £21+vat.
