SORN / Road Tax question

Hi,
I've just acquired a 1978 dolomite 1500HL which has been stood in a garage since 1997. The previous owners (my parents) haven't taxed it since then, and apparently didn't give a SORN notice at the time. I need to re-register the vehicle in my name, but not sure if i'll be dropping anyone in it if I do it myself, or whether my parents need to contact the DVLA. Does anyone have any experience of this situation? Should I just reregister and declare it off road anyway?

Thanks in advance,

Jerm.

Not a problem, send the V5 off to register it in your name. You will get a new V5 and there is no requirement to register it as SORN as it has been continuously off road since before the obligation commenced. You would only have to register SORN if you now taxed it and then took it off the road again.

I'm fairly certain that the SORN regulations weren't in force at that time, hence any car not taxed and on the road then wouldn't have had to be SORNed. I suspect that once you inform the DVLA of the change of keeper, you will then have to make a SORN declaration. They will also send you a new style registration document if one hasn't already been issued. One of my cars was taken off the road several years ago and I've never had to make a SORN declaration on it, nor has a new style registration document been issued. If in doubt, ring the DVLA and check, but I'm confident that this information is correct.
both the bugs my son has weren't sorn'd the first one he had was taxed though the second had like yours not been sorn'd but had not been taxed fromm about 2000
so when he changed over the v5 just declared it sorn then no problems he wrote a little letter and posted it of at the same time as the v5 change

If the DVLA were going to fine your parents they would have done it by now. It's probably fallen off their computer somehow.

Thanks guys, that was really fast! I'll no doubt be hassling you again with tech problems when I finally start to try and get it on the road.
There is no need to SORN a car which was already off road when the regulations came in until that car is used on the road and subsequently taken off road again.

I should know as I have at least a dozen such cars sitting around the place...

If you try to SORN it they will get very confused and send it back by which time some brain dead idiot (probably with 4 A grade A levels by recent results) will have entered the details on a computer which will then issue standard reminders to you automatically and make your life hell until eternity.
