You don't need a vice - I did mine a couple of years ago, and I don't have a vice. Trouble is, I can't really remember how I did it
I think I pulled it through using a long bolt and two of those big washers that you get on the rear suspension tie bars (i.e. place the bush next to the ...

But don't forget to do that as well - or you'll be changing the stalk again before too long!Carl wrote:then re-wire the headlights through relays.

Re: Rust Converters
I don't know about the other stuff, but my favourite method is to:
i) apply Jenolite over and over again, until you get back to bare metal (or at least mostly bare metal with a peppering of black dots where there is still some rust that I can't be bothered to get rid if)
ii) spray with zinc primer ...

Re: How safe is a classic?
I can't take all the credit, I'm afraid. The spike idea originated, I believe, on one of those road safety / police action progs (having been suggested by someone at ROSPA!).
I've felt this to be a great idea from the moment I first heard it  - though from memory, it was Clarkson who ...

Re: I love the rain
notchy steering can be due to rusty u/j in the steering.
I hate this rain; my car is off the road, my van is off for a respray, so I have to ride my Yamaha Fazer to work - got bl00dy soaked this morning!

Re: New member. Get a Dolomite? He ponders...
Just a quick note on classic car policies that don't accumulate the no claims - if you have one of these policies for a few years and then subsequenlty transfer to a regular policy with the same insurer, they may well give you an equivalent no claims bonus anyway from the years that you had the ...

Re: Lights out
You've probably just melted the switch due to the crappy wiring design - the current to power the lights goes through the switch.
I've melted two switches in the past. I changed the wiring to include two relays (one for dipped and one for main), which took the current, leaving the switch with the ...

Re: Special Tools -v- Resourcefulness
An XR3i totalled my Talbot Horizon years ago by crashing into the back of it. I pulled the back into shape by attaching the car to a big oak tree with a metal chain - and then driving off sharply!

Re: IN RUBBER PLEASE
Have you tried using grease instead of gasket sealant?
Malcolm recommended that I did it on my Sprint - seemed to work a treat. Apparently it also means that you can easily re-use the gasket, but I haven't tried that yet, so don't know for sure.
