The thread size is 1/2" UNF.

You could get a 1/2" UNF die to clean up the thread, but given the locknut goes on easily I'd suggest it's the internal thread in the tie rod end that is at fault and may have compromised the thread on the tie rod. If the damage is superficial you might be able to use ...

Interestingly, the 14 year owner posts it on here, but exactly one week later a dealer sells it on ebay; that's either a very quick off the mark dealer or the owner was desperate to sell!

His reasoning was skew gears always 'ride' and with the jackshaft having no end float its the other two that will rise and fall

It all has a new camshaft, jackshaft etc...
The late Brian Kitley always advocated trying to keep used distributor drives, water pumps and jackshafts in mated groups and if he replaced one with new he'd recommend replacing all three....but then he was charging for parts and labour!
