Re: Cam Bolt Material
When I rebuild a Sprint engine I add two more bolts to the cam (if requested) for this I have a drill jig because due to the existing notch on the cam there is no room for error. I once dismantled an engine that someone had used stainless bolts and were lucky that they had not sheared as stainless ...

Re: Brake lock up
When I had a TR4 I had a severe brake judder (this was in 1979 by the way) and I stuck some emery cloth using Araldite to the braking face of some old worn out pads. I then drove the car very gently and applied the brakes gently too. This trued up the disc nicely and ensured they were parallel. I ...

Re: Threaded plug in engine block
Suggest you leave it well alone as I believe this is the plugged hole for the oilway that is fed by the jackshaft and transfers oil to the head.

Re: Exhaust under the axle ?
Triumph TR4's have them under the axle too.
If you exit at the sill its fine for a track only car but leaves, dirt and garbage at the side of the road cause problems for a road car that the gases blow about, which is why my Lotus 7 replica took me several hours to get the exhaust out at the back ...

Re: Steve's rules for mechanics.
A few of you will have heard of my "rules" for successful spannering, for those who haven't, or haven't heard them all, here they are!
1) Never trust someone else's diagnosis!
Steve
I built an engine for a chap who then sold it to someone and some time later the new owner of said engine ...

Re: Double anti-roll bar
I had a double anti roll bar fitted to an Escort Mexico that I owned in the seventies and tried to copy the idea on the Sprint but gave up and made a thicker standard type one from a Sierra bar (what else). At castle Combe it made no difference to lap times but did not crash potholes so much. What ...

Re: "Accidental" Front Suspension Rebuild
This is a familiar tale
When I obtained my Sprint all those years ago It wallowed and swerved about the road more like a boat than a car. Gradually I went through it bit by bit changing this and replacing that until it started to go where I pointed it and stop like a proper car.
The strangest ...

Re: Rear axle leak
I wonder if a simple spinner that clamps round the shaft might throw the oil before it breaks through.
I never solved the issue on my Sprint and used to soak the brake shoes in brake cleaner and set fire to them and refit  Every MOT I would insert a new set of shoes.

Last weekend we were in our Mondeo towing a trailer loaded with a sprint lump for rebuilding when this Sprint overtook us near Beaconsfield
sure looked nice and I smiled because I had just been with several Dolomite owners.

I've sure gotten old!
I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind,
I can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts.
I have bouts with dementia ...

Re: Timing chain tensioner
I have rebuilt quite a few sprint engines now and I often find that the original Renold tensioner is in very good condition and just because it has light grooving does not mean its useless.
I would not be in a hurry to replace perfectly useable parts. Chain guides and tensioners with grooves cause ...

Re: Where were you 50 years ago?
I was a similar age to you and remember going to a friends house and sat with them for a little while as they all watched. However it did not really get to me as much as it did to others and just like modern youngsters I carried on regardless!
