Hi All,

Looking for a good condition front screen, must be sundym. Willing to travel. I have a clear rear, a sundym rear or a laminated front sundym showing signs of delamination (but I believe usable, photo to follow), for trade or will buy outright.

I don't have one BUT when my old clear screen shattered last year it was replaced under insurance by Autoglass. They took a week to get hold of a screen, and it had to by "tinted" as that was all they could get. So new ones are available. Somewhere....
Cost, £75 excess.

Pilkingtons quoted me £265.15 plus VAT for a triplex marked sundym screen with £25.00 delivery costs whilst at NEC last week, which has caused me to initiate supply to the Club of green tinted non triplex laminated screens at considerably less cost from another supplier

Alun's source sounds like the way forward in the future. I certainly wouldn't want to be in a serious accident with a toughened screen, could be messy.

The only differance could be is that Triplex are certified to B.S 857 and their glass carries the B.S 857 kite mark. Other suppliers make their glass 'in accordance to 857' but are not actually kite marked or certified.

That's the replacement screen fitted, turns out it is a laminated one, bonus. The car is now mobile again.

I'm pretty sure all Sprints came with laminated glass screens, certainly there is no toughened option for Sundym screens. Lesser models like my late 73 Toledo came with clear toughened screens which would normally be marked Triplex Toughened with a year dot under the word "toughened" and probably a small blue sticker saying "Zebrazone" Original laminated screens will be marked Triplex laminated and if tinted will be marked under triplex the word "sundym" as well as the BS kitemark. If you have a replacement screen from a non triplex source fitted way back when such things were available, it may say anything, but would probably carry the kitemark.

Below is a pic of my car, you can tell it's a toughened screen, when the light catches it, as here, you can see the vertical zebrazone stripes in the glass, also the zebrazone label is visible, blue rectangle centre bottom of the screen.

Ted from the 2.0/2.5 register had a batch of screens done. They had options of top tint only, clear or sundym equivalent. As I was using the car daily I requested a heated front screen along with a handful of others. Is that an option from your supplier for the dolomite? I recall my heated screen was about £250inc VAT, which is well worth it for safety if the car lives outside and is used in the winter.

Yes and yes, 15" MGF 5 spokes shod with 195/50/15 Toyo Proxes. I had to relieve the rear arch lips a little, but otherwise they fit fine.

Options as described are all available, but unfortunately each option commands a minimum order. With the quantities we are talking about, minimum orders create several problems: high capital outlay, storage and lack of sufficient demand for certain options being high amongst them

Steve, You seem to be in the know a bit when it comes to screens. I just fitted what I could get hold of as the price of the correct screen couldn't be justified. Your picture shows a toughened screen with a blue lable, I have a toughened screen that is also green tinted and has a green 'Zebrazone' lable. Does this sound right? There seem to be different views on what is best but it you have e it fitted to a race car it must be OK.

George, I'm pretty sure that if I was racing competitively, rather than just the odd trackday, they would insist on a laminated screen.

But for road work there is no restriction, your zebrazone toughened screen is perfectly legal and acceptable, though I suspect it's not OE for your very late car, probably a replacement fitted sometime in the car's life. It is possible to date Triplex glass, where it says "toughened" in small white letters, there will be a tiny white dot under one of the letters. this signifies which year in a decade the glass was made, so a dot under T would be 1981, under H would be 75 and so on. Since toughened only has 9 letters, a year with a zero like your 1980 car should have a dot off the end past the D.
In practice, people hate the toughened screens because when (if) they shatter, you get a kit of a million bits, mostly inside the car and you will still be fishing tiny shards of broken glass from your heater vents 20 years later. By contrast a laminated screen usually stays more or less in one piece when damaged and is therefore much less messy. On the upside, a toughened screen is much easier to handle/remove/refit. You can thump and bend a toughened screen in ways that would undoubtedly crack a laminated one.
