Hi all,

Im looking for a good condition & working 1500 Overdrive gearbox.

Ideally as close to Bristol as possible.

I may be mistaken (don't think so though) but i'm pretty sure you could remove the 1850 bellhousing from the overdrive box you got from Dan and substitute the bellhousing from your non O/D 1500 box and it will work (assuming both are single rail boxes)

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the info, Ill do some research! However in the meantime if someone has a 'Known good' OD box i will happily buy it for piece of mind.

I am not sure about that,
didn't Jod Clark post an explanation of what is different and why it difficult therefore to employ an 1850 'box
on an OHV engine?


I do 1850 bellhousings are the same on manual 'boxes with or without o/d.

If there IS a difference, it will be in the length of the gearbox input shaft. The actual main gearbox case is the same on both models, so will accept either 1500 or 1850 bellhousing on the same 5 bolt fitting. Ancient wisdom suggests that the 1850 has a closer ratio gearset, closer even than the GT6 box from which it was derived, but this may be an urban myth. Without the relevant parts lists to hand, speculation is futile, so i'll stop it!

I am certain the input shaft is longer on the 1850, and the clutch splines have a larger diameter (though that need confirming) .

same as GT6 box v std spitfire.

Whilst the bellhousings both do have a five bolt fixing, the patterns are different, so only four will actually line up.

Early 1850s used the GT6 gearbox but with a different bellhousing only.
