Many years ago, almost too long to remember, my father sent me down to the ironmongers to buy thruppence worth of mixed nails. A small selection came in a brown paper bag which I used to count every night. All bright and shiny they were.

Please Sir could I have two ounces of Jon’s spanners. I would want nice bright shiny ones too which I could pin on the wall under Jon’s picture.

I have a five shilling British Postal Order which I saved up out of my pocket money to buy what would have been my one and only dinky toy, only available in those days, if we bought them directly from the Liverpool factory. Perhaps I never saved enough for the British Postal Order is still sitting in my drawer. Somewhat yellow with age I fear.
