Thought I'd start a mini resto of my track Sprint.

I left PKN with the sprayer earlier in the week for him to have a look to see how much welding is needed. I knew it needed a patch on the right hand rear wheel arch/boot floor. This became apparent when I had my prang at Castle Combe last year. He's had it up on the ramp & given it a thorough going over but that was about it welding wise. The MoT guy said it was pretty solid underneath. :D

I'm off to collect the car from the spray shop in the morning so we'll be discussing tactics. To keep the cost down I'm going to have whatever paint he has spare (probably). He wants my Weber 45s so that will be part of the deal also. I'm going to have the engine bay sprayed as well so over the weekend I shall remove the engine & gearbox, also I will be getting rid of the vinyl roof and removing the 'D' post vinyls carefully.

I am a bit puzzled.......
In the recent past you have mentioned that you are considering reshelling your track Sprint. Why?

If you get another shell you will have to seam weld it anyway so why not just go ahead repair your existing shell,
no matter how much it needs?
That way you can be sure of what you have?

Anyway, as always, I'll follow your thread with interest :D .

Erm! you've got me puzzled as well Ian. I know I said a few months ago that I was thinking about reshelling it but as you can see from the original post of this thread I've obviously had second thoughts. Ah! well, onwards & upwards. :D

Here's the repair I had done in the week. I bit more than was first thought...

As you can see in the last two pics Jon also had a quick bash at straightening the panels. This is what it was like...

Jon had a spare five minutes so he knocked this up...

The base coat will possibly be white or off white (I know I said I didn't want white Alan  ). The bonnet, roof & boot lid will be dark green and the masking tape represents green bits as well. This may very well change as we go.

After fitting some lowering springs on Mary's Smart Roadster I got around to PKN this afternoon...

I then removed the vinyl roof & side vinyls, the chrome trim, the side stripes, front & rear lights and number plates.

Then a quick going over with the old knotted wirebrush thingy...

A bit more welding needed but I know Jon will sort all that out easily (you should see the state of the VW camper he has to restore :woohoo: ).

Ouch Mart, I never realised she would have that much rust. At least she will be more aerodynamic when it's sorted.

Poor Mary, she has her work cut out this time.

Good Luck

Ahhh, I see that the love for the knotted wire brush is still going strong. Nice.

It is the first line of the original post......

"Thought I'd start a mini resto of my track Sprint."

because I read "mini resto" as being a temporary stop gap.
 Sorry Martin, my mistake.

Ah! I see Ian. No, definitely restoring this one. :D

Darren, I doubt very much if Mary will be doing anything on this resto.

Y'know what they say, Mart, rust is lighter than carbon fibre! May not be true but its a good excuse! Steve

I took the engine & gearbox out today. Managed to shear off an exhaust to downpipe bolt.

Then I took the front & rear screens out and managed to crack the front screen. I've taken dozens of these out and not damaged one before.

That hole's a big bigger now the screen is out.
