Yes it is an oil level sender, standard fit on later (91 on) Carltons.

That particular sump is now on Ians redtop Sprint after he ripped his sump plug out from having the suspension too low, along with the other bits I mentioned, I can't remember what I charged him but it was less than £50 the lot!

I don't currently have a spare one (Ian had my last) but you can get an combined electric oil pressure guage sender and oil light sender to go on this engine, goes in in place of the original oil light sender and is easy to wire up. Matching 2" VDO 0-5bar guages freely available too.

It may just be the angle, but I think you MAY have mounted the dipstick a little high, I'll do the measurements on one of my spare engines and post them tomorrow.

Steve,

This is that very sump! its a small world.

Needless to say Alan had to make a new plug mounting...

Also do you have a link for the integrated pressure/level unit? sounds nifty :)

I don't have a link but I can probably get you a Vauxhall part number.

That sump of Ians came from Germany at ridiculous cost and was originally meant for an Opel Rekord or some such (its in his build thread)
I found with the 8v engine that I didn't need to chop the front from the sump or the section above the rack (though clearance is VERY tight) but I did need to relieve the subframe to clear the oil filter. Then once I had the gearbox on the engine, the angles wouldn't work anymore so I did the subframe mod thoroughly rather than chop the sump about. (truthfully, I don't trust my welding to be oiltight!)

I have in my garage, an oil cooler, takeoff fitting and pipes which I had thought to use but doesn't seem necessary on my car, interested? It came from an Astra GTE IIRC.

Cool. Your engine must sit slightly lower than mine in the engine bay as i have 5mm max clearance to the steering rack and no need to chop anything off the bottom. I like the solution to the fouling of the front cross member on the subframe! I chose to chop the subframe and then weld in a new cross piece like Carledo did.

I am with Carledo on the welding of the sump. I couldn't get it oil tight.

Hence why you have it now. :D

Steve,

Not sure on oil cooler, I seem to remember Alan saying they never used to run one in the sunbeam rally car he used to spanner for, so didnt put one on!

Steve, Ian,

Thats why Alan is doing it, he wouldnt be if he didnt think it would be oil tight.

Hello All,

A quick post to bring us up to date.

The car is now tucked away waiting its next stage.

Almost looks like we planned it....

Image

Steve, here is the VDO sender. Alan was sure he had one and found it in his garage I think.

I was worrying a bit about clearance to the prop but as you can see, there's loads.

Hopefully, there will be something shiny in the next update.....

think its going to have to be Kawasaki. I looked for Escorts which are done in it(similarly proportioned and styling) and it looks mega. see above.

Hello!

So there has been major progress!

The shell is with a bodyshop/painter man which is on the same farm as where it spent all of its time at Alan's.

Alan and Shaun have done a variety of finishing jobs and Shaun has started on stripping the huge amount of paint and filler primer on the body panels.

I think the progress speaks for itself :).

See below!

Pete

I have had a multitude of holes filled in, in an attempt to get the desired effect. See below for inspiration. also see bulkhead plate to cover the bigger holes in that area.

Relatively untouched in this picture....but....
