Is that Mel's old car from Edinburgh.

This one has spent a sizeable portion of it's life in the south-west, MoT reminder from some place in Plymouth from '85, and was owned by someone in Tiverton until recently. Somehow the salty sea-side didn't destroy this one :-k

That FHP numberplate is familiar because its a Canley plate! Its in the same series as the famous pre production Sprint FHP923L. The Herald hatchback prototype is also FHP but with a C suffix rather than the L, as is one of the known factory 2000 rally cars FHP 922C. HP and VC plates were used almost exclusively by the factory so this car was almost certainly registered by Standard Triumph when new. By contrast the RW plate worn by all the press Sprints is a west London (Ealing?) plate suggesting that the cars were probably registered out of Triumphs Park Royal workshops. I once owned a 1961 Ford Galaxy registered by Ford import/export division HQ at Brentford, that car was 9000 RW.
Mels car, which has survived and been restored, is registered SSS which is a common Scottish reg.

Steve,

RW is also certainly a Coventry reg.

Towards the bottom of the wiki page is a full list.

And for me, apparently! You'd think, after watching a dozen or so series of QI, that i'd realize that anything I "just know" is almost certainly wrong!

Hmm, that's interesting. Do you know why they used the FH, as that was (according to the Wiki page) a Gloucester suffix? Also does that mean that Triumph kept this as a company car before selling, or simply they registered it for the new owner as opposed to the owner registering the car themselves? :scratchin:

FHP is a Coventry registration. It doesn't necessarily mean that it was originally owned by Triumph. The only way to find out would be to obtain the details of all the previous registered keepers from the DVLA. If you send them a completed V888 and a fiver, they will provide you with whatever information they have.

Good to see this coming along.

It is the HP part that matters here. If there are 3 letters together, it is the 2nd and 3rd ones.

@covcourier Ah, well that makes sense.

The original steering coupling came apart easily enough, hopefully the new bushings will turn up tomorrow so that I can have a 'useable' (I use the term loosely) car again. Battery probably wants charging after sitting for the best part of 2 weeks...

The f in FHP is irrelevant, the area designation letters are HP which is a Coventry reg.
Whilst not all the HP plates were registered by the factory, they did tend to take big blocks, however, most new cars were registered by the selling dealer, not the factory, a car registered by the factory could be an exotic prototype or competition car - or it could just be a middle management runabout! It may also (in this case) just have been sold by a Coventry dealership. Only more research, with DVLA as Dave suggested, or from BMITH with a Heritage certificate will narrow it down.

Update time. Unfortunately sitting outside has taken it's toll on this car, here's what I found:

Time for a re-shell I think.

Found the rest of it

It has been off the road for a while

Things were looking bad...

...but progress has been made

It's sporting a fetching blue door...

...with matching boot!

Are you going to source steel panels or are you going to use the fibreglass ones the the Club sell? The club do headlamp retaining panels as well.
