Hi All!

I thought I would start a thread on here as opposed to posts on facebook as i'm going to hopefully do a lot in the next few days to get my dolly through the MOT.

What i've done so far:
Wiring loom - total replacement as it was completely fubar
Handbrake - New cables and new lever
Rear brakes - new shoes, put back the missing 'H' pieces from both sides, adjusted so they are right (hopefully)
Exhaust Fixed a hole with GunGum :D
Front pads (offside) - Not done nearside yet as I can't get the wheel off
Brake master cylinder - Replaced the seals and bled the system
Front lights - re-created a loom for the front lights and put relays in place. I'll go halogen when the budget isnt so tight
Underseal! Got under it on my back and scraped away a lot of the old underseal, it's pretty solid underneath, only surface rust which I've treated and waxoyled
Fluid change all around
Steering bush - The bush through the firewall was non existant, so put one in
Ignition wiring - Some fool had put the wires on backwards so had to re-wire and pray
Head gasket change - Everything off, had the head skimmed and everything checked. They claim it's all fixed but keep reading
Filler - Fixed a few niggles

So yeah - thats so far. I'm going to hopefully get it to the MOT place tomorrow..

It WILL fail on:
The large hole in the chassis leg but as it's not been on the road since i've owned it I figure it might be useful to know what else is wrong with it so I can get it sorted.
Unfortunately the HG doesnt seem to be sealing right so i'm going to re-do it with a gasket from rimmers as opposed to an unknown (not to mention cheap) HG from fleabay.. so it will probibly fail on emmisions as well
One of the wheel studs has decided to come away from the splines too so I need to find a way to get that off so I can change the nearside brakes..

Tomorrows jobs - try and get the mixture to a level where it runs and worry about it failing when i'm down there. The guy is sound and he said that he is happy to get the mixture right while plugged in to the gas analyser (not during the test itself of course)
Plug the headlight relay in as I only got one today
Secure the battery in place and clip any straying wires to the body.

Future jobs - Head gasket and whatever it fails on. I think I might make a video of me changing it, prehaps (assuming I do it right) it could be of some use as i've not managed to find anything like it on youtube.

Keep us posted on the Mot outcome, the chassis rail looks like you need to replace the whole rail as that's quite a bit of corrosion on it. :)

Hi
Think I've seen and answered a few of your posts on facebook?

This is a good resource too...

https://www.dollywiki.co.uk/wiki/SU_Carburetor_Tuning

You can get from that page to Tony's bit on head gasket and head work too.

I would go for a club replacement chassis rail.

Awful wiring as you say....the only thing to do is get a new loom.

Hectic day meant I didn't get to do the dolly but I will be having a go tomorrow. MOT is booked for 1pm thursday so it will be interesting either way it goes.
Can I buy from the club if I am not a member? and yes Jonners, that'd be me :) Thanks for the link, I have it on favorites already :)

I have a question - 'Sealing rings' - there's 4 supplied with the head gasket set I bought from rimmers... where do they go? because I cannot for the life of me remember putting them in anywhere

Also on the subject of sealing - any thoughts/experiences on this?

The fire rings are built into the gasket. I have never fitted any separately.
The door seals go in the 1cm channel that goes round the inside edge of all doors.

So does that mean the seals are any good Jonners?

Car update:

Got there, had done a bit of fiddling over the last few weeks - mixture was suspect as you could see the MASSIVE difference in the height of the 2 jets so I put them back to roughly factory and connected the lot up, fresh dashpot oil and all... So it fires up and it runs like a dream!? idle steady, no hunting, no bogging down and no more blue smoke out of the exhaust!?

So I now have even less of a clue what to do with it, whether to change the HG or not... it will be the first real 'drive' tomorrow though so I guess we'll see..

I posted a video on facebook of the car reving and a few people suggested the mountings or jonners suggested the butterflies, so will do some reading up. Another video is here.. this one is beyond my understanding as to what happens at about 25 seconds.. feel free to diagnose

There could be many explanations for this but I fancy a sticking needle valve causing an over rich mixture.

MOT Result:

Failed...

001 - Hole in the chassis leg
002 - Battery Insecure
003 - Emissions excessive (4.9%)
004 - Headlamp not working on main beam (one out of 4)
005 - Exhause insecure (stainless - needs to be supported some how)

Left it at the garage for the welding.. all in all, RESULT!

If you turn the jet adjusters up into the carb you should weaken the idle mix enough to get a pass.
I'd try about 3 flats on each.

Sounds good overall though. If the float valves are a bit sticky its worth giving them a clean out by taking the top off each float chamber. Its only 3 screws.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the head gasket. Use up all the old fuel and put in some fresh good stuff
will also help.
